What's New April 28, 2009

Well it finally happened, Tesla Motors has unveiled an all electric car that looks nice. Not only that, it can be plugged in anywhere because it was built with multiple options for charging including the ordinary home electrical plug. They claim it will charge in about 4 hours. The only problem is that it is far too expensive at $57,000 plus. Never the less it does open the door to electric vehicles, because it has a range of between 140 to 300 miles. I guess this depends on how fast you drive, but I am not sure. Who knows, maybe once this car is out, companies like Honda and Toyota will come out with cheaper models of their own? I would like to say that American companies will do this, but I don't have much hope of that happening.

It is turning out that those big Internet giants like Amazon and Google are feeling the pinch, or is it something else? With Amazon.com I have to think that they shot themselves in the foot once they started demanding sales tax from New York residents. The federal government ruled some time ago that sales tax didn't have to be collected on the internet for states and yet New York State demanded that all online vendors selling to New York Residents collect it. I never understood why the vendors gave in? I know that they sold to a lot more people than just New York residents, but I am sure that now almost every state would want them to collect sales tax, raising the price of their goods. As for Google, I believe it is just a combination of hard times and competition. If you were to ask Amazon why they are doing this, they will tell you that they are only streamlining operations.

There is a new study out and it claims that the average American is now spending over 8 hours a day in front of one screen or another and it goes on to say that the computer has replaced radio as the second most time consuming activity that we do. I would be interested to see a study on whether our vision is getting worse because of this.

A new problem has arisen that has to do with cell phones. First let me tell you that sending explicit naked photos, even of one's self sent over a cell phone is breaking the child pornography laws if you are a minor. It turns out that some teenagers think this is funny or hip and quite a few are now doing it. A prosecutor in Pennsylvania is deciding right now whether to charge a cheer leader with this crime because he found a naked photo of her on someone's cell phone. She says that naked photos were never taken of her. Could someone have put her head on a naked body? That is certainly a possibility with today's photo technology.

Killer Robots

I certainly don't like what our military is experimenting with. They are trying to develop a killer robot. Shades of Terminator. This new generation of killers would work WITHOUT human supervision. An example of this might be robots that are put into a specific area and will fire on anything that comes into it, such as a child wandering in or a pet. If it could sort out the difference between adults and children then the enemy would send children in to destroy the robots. It is a no win situation. A killer robot without human control is like a crazed killer on the loose. It is said that by 2020 these machines will start to appear. Does this mean that someday entire armies of robots will fight other robot armies. This might make war too easy. Get ready for a revelation. According to The Register, robots were used last year in Iraq but turned their guns on their handlers and had to be withdrawn. Quick thinking was able to avert a disaster, THIS TIME!

New laws are being constructed here and in Europe that would allow the governments to search computers and electrical devices without warrants and seize material. This is supposedly to look for copyright violations and for public security. This means that if you travel, your computer can be searched and even your Ipod. The treaty details have been kept secret, but the thought is that the movie and song industries are pushing this. If you have songs or movies on your computer that you copied, LOOK OUT!

A new system has just come out. It is known as the Hostage Tracking System and can track someone above or below ground. The system depends on a micro transmitter that is so small it can be hidden in a piece of clothing. The transmitter is smaller than a quarter.

Three dimensional pictures have now come to medical imaging. A new electronic cigarette has been released. It delivers smoke that contains nicotine and uses no tobacco what so ever. The smoke itself is nothing more than water vapor.

Paragon Space Development has announced that it will be the first company to grow flowers on the moon. They are an engineering firm that builds habitats for plants and animals living in microgravity. So how would they do this? They have a greenhouse ready to go aboard a lunar lander designed by Odyssey Moon, a competitor for the Google Lunar X Prize of 30 million dollars. Supposedly the greenhouse will be used to grow mustard seeds on the moon.

Would you believe that doses of drugs could be locked so that without the key the drug could not be released. Researchers are working on drugs that can only be unlocked by light pulses. This is quite a breakthrough, because this allows the drugs to be targeted to a specific area before the drug is released, sparing the surrounding healthy cells from having to absorb drugs that they don't need and which could be harmful to them.
