What's New November 8, 2008
New stuff seems to be coming out faster and faster as the pace of technology increases. One never knows from one day to the next what might appear. Some of the stuff almost looks like science fiction sometimes. One can only wonder what the next 100 years will bring. We are advancing so fast that the next hundred years will probably represent more advancement than we had seen from the beginning of man on earth until now. The nice part is that this advancement is taking part in ever facet of life. Dermal Optical Thermolysis is a technique that is used to resurface skin. It is called DOT therapy for short. A CO2 laser is used that targets the area where the skin is to be rejuvenated. The laser delivers a pattern of tiny micro-sized dots, rather than effecting the entire surface of the skin. The procedure will tighten up skin, improve brown spots, sun damage, wrinkles, lines and acne scarring. It is claimed that the procedure only takes minutes. A new golf simulator known as GolfBlaster3 is on the market. Not only will it give you a realistic golf simulation, but it will also simulate other sports. It is an all weather simulator that not only is said to contain realistic graphics and great special effects, but can be set up anywhere indoors. The simulator will analyze your game to help you improve. I am not a golfer, but some golfers have stated that this simulator has really done wonders for them. As computer chips become more powerful, so do all simulators since they are then able to handle more multitasking events. A new device known as Molecular Breast Imaging or MBI is about to burst on the scene. A six year study was conducted at the Mayo Clinic and it showed that cancerous tumors were three times more likely to be found using the MBI method versus mammogram imaging among women with dense breast tissue. Besides being more accurate for women with dense breast tissue, the MBI is cheaper. Another advantage will be that it will save time and money since it will eliminate some of the further testing required after a mammogram. There is sometimes a downside with new technologies and the downside for MBI is that it emits about eight times the radiation, but this is expected to decrease as the technology improves. Technology is improving in law enforcement also. Law enforcement uses the National Crime Information Center or NCIC to check on criminal backgrounds, or as they put it, the purpose for maintaining the NCIC system is to provide a computerized database for ready access by a criminal justice agency making an inquiry and for prompt disclosure of information in the system from other criminal justice agencies about crimes and criminals. Our devices have become so advanced that now software has been invented that will allow police agencies to check the NCIC from a Windows based cell phone or Blackberry. Solar Cells Photo Source: Stock.xching A new solar cell has been invented and here is the great part, it is envisioned that homeowners will be able to print out plastic sheets of solar cells on inexpensive printers. These sheets could then be put on the roof of your home. Somenath Mitra, a Chemistry professor is experimenting with developing these cells right now and he envisions them not only be used on your home, but on your car and any outdoor devices that need power. Google now has a text messaging service at 46645 that will answer most any question you put to it. Are you looking for a particular restaurant and only know part of the name, text them. A few years ago I spoke about MetalStorm. At that time it was in the development stage. MetalStorm is a technology that fires bullets electronically. If one were to put thousands of gun barrels together you could fire a bullet from each one at the same time. Now a new weapon has been developed that can fire almost 1 million rounds per minute. Yes you heard me correctly, it fires 16,000 rounds per second. The system eliminates all that complicated mechanics such as machine gun mechanisms. What happens is multiple projectiles are stacked in each barrel, there is no feed system or ejection system, there isn't even a breach opening system or any moving parts. You can assemble the barrels in any configuration you want to fit the threat. The creators of the gun claim that it can never jam. If one round doesn't fire, the next one behind it will push it out. The technology lends itself to handguns also. It is also able to fire grenades at the rate of ¼ million a minute. The system can also be unmanned and its sensors will fire the weapon if anything approaches. NASA just launched a new Gamma-ray Large Area Telescope in June of this year. It is orbiting the Earth right now. It is known as GLAST. It is going to search for signs of new laws of physics, investigate dark matter and perform many other missions, some of which may even be secret. Gamma-ray bursts will be studied in hopes of learning what causes them. Another thing that fascinates scientists is the early universe and they believe that this telescope will allow them to see back to almost the beginning of the universe. They believe this because the time it takes light to reach us from the furthest reaches of space is about the same time that it's believed that the universe has been expanding, thus we should be able to see things as they were right after the big bang. |
