Our Underground Journey

“Dig we must for a greater New York”. I remember seeing this sign at a construction site many years ago. It was true then, but it is even more true for the rest of the country today. Several countries are digging like mad and this country is one of them. Many of the nations of the world have decided that the best and only protection from nuclear attack is digging way down into the earth. As I have stated in the past, the United States has been using huge tunneling boring machines to dig extremely deep tunnels and they are not alone. It has been said that if we knew the extent of the underground construction in this country, we would surely be amazed. None of it is of any directed use to the citizens of the U.S. however. What I mean by this is that none of the ordinary people of this country has access to any of the new underground facilities.

This begs the question of who does? Well I guess if you bet on the White House, Senate, House of Representatives, Supreme Court and the heads of various agencies, along with many in the military, you would probably win your bet. Why is it that with all this underground construction going on, deep shelters could not be built in certain locations, perhaps in the largest cities in each state, so that the populations would at least have a chance to survive? The government would tell you that this can not be done because they could not stock these places with enough supplies and water for the huge amounts of people that would use them. It seems that they would be right, because most of these types of shelters require supplies for at least 60 days if not more. That is based on what is believed to be the time for the radiation to dissipate to a safe level from an attack and this may not even be correct, if a dirty bomb is used.

When I talk about a dirty nuclear bomb, I am talking about about one that is salted with radioactive material that will be disbursed into the air when the nuclear blast happens. This could contaminate an area for many centuries, making it totally uninhabitable. I sometimes wonder what would be left to come back to for our government representatives if this country was hit with a massive nuclear attack? I guess the protection is predicated upon only one or two nuclear bombs hitting us, Most government officials believe that a nuclear attack would come from a terrorist group and that they would only have access to one or a very few missiles. Others believe that they wouldn't use missiles at all, but that they would smuggle in a bomb or two and then detonate them. They think that the target might be the ports of New York or New Jersey and that the device would probably arrive in a container. This is based on the fact that only a small part of the containers that are unloaded are ever checked.

We have been working on new types of devices that are supposed to sniff out nuclear and biological material, but many believe that these devices will be ineffective, because the material can be shielded from them if carefully packaged. I have no way of knowing if any of this is true, but I suspect that it is. The problem is that it is impractical to search every container. Think of it this way, some ships now have over 1,000 containers on them. To do a proper search, each container would have to be emptied. The price of goods would go up so high that it could price some things out of reach for many of us and even these types of searches might not catch something harmful that was made to look like something ordinary. Unfortunately for us we live in very troubling times.

It makes one wonder how some of these terrorist groups got so powerful that they can actually muster enough men and leadership to challenge the armies of the world? Looking at Al-Qaeda we find a group that was founded around 1988. The members are from many different countries and a fundamentalist Sunni movement that is calling for Jihad, or holy war. It is said that this is the group that attacked the United States on September 11, 2001. This began what the U.S. calls the war on terrorism. It is amazing to note that this group is able to muster so many individuals that they were able not only to suffer losses in the thousands on the battlefield, but convince people to blow themselves up for the good of the cause. The establishment of the Israeli state has prompted them to believe that there is some sort of alliance between Christians and Jews to destroy Islam and that killing is justified in jihad. This cause appeals to some in the Islamic world but not all, or their numbers would be much higher. There are many other groups that are considered terrorist groups, but there is no doubt that Al-Qaeda is the most famous. What I have told you is the official story, here is the unofficial one. Al-Qaeda was created by the CIA and the whole idea of Al-Qaeda came from Washington. A book states that the reason it was created was to bankroll Osama bin Laden to enable him to fight the Soviet Union during the 1982s in Afghanistan. The organization was said to have been given 3.5 billion dollars for the fight and that half the money came from the US and the other half from Saudi Arabia.

Did we develop Al-Qaeda and did they somehow turn on us, or did we turn on them? Were they really responsible for 9/11? Many believe that they were not. If they are not as big a threat as we were led to believe, why are we building all these tunnels and underground facilities? It is because the US perceives that we have other threats and still considers Russia one of them, along with China and even North Korea and Iran. One has to remember that it is the job of the military to be paranoid. In almost any given situation, if you ask for advice from the military you will be told to attack, which is not always the best course of action. That is precisely what President Kennedy was told during the Cuban Missile crisis. This advice would have undoubtedly led to World War III. At least we are only digging holes at the moment and wasting money.
