I thought it might be interesting to highlight some of the little known ufo events of the 20th century. Some of these events you might have heard of while others you might not have. The year was 1900, the place was Hanging Rock, Australia. The following event has been debated for over 100 years. The debate is about whether this event really happened or not. As with so many other ufo events, it may never be proven either way. The story goes that four girls plus their chaperone from Appleyard College went out for a picnic to Hanging Rock. This is an area near Melbourne. None of them were ever seen again. Unexplainable event had been reported in the area. Were there aliens there and was this an abduction. No bodies were ever found. I bet you never heard about this event? In 1903 it was reported that a large creature, that was about seven feet tall with long hair, horns and huge eyes appeared in Iola Kansas. It was thought to be an alien. Angry coal miners from the area attacked it and chased it away. It was not seen again. It was said that the first man that saw the creature collapsed with fright. Also the creature's head was described as floating above it's body. Was this an alien, a paranormal event, or is there some other explanation? I guess we will never know the answer to this either. In 1904 the ship, the USS Supply was about 400 miles from San Francisco, California. They saw something in the sky. For lack of a better term they called them remarkable meteors. The report stated The meteors appeared near the horizon and below the clouds, traveling in a group from northwest by north (true) directly toward the ship. The following is a part of the report that was filed: "At first their angular motion was rapid and color a rather bright red. As they approached the ship they appeared to soar, passing above the clouds at an elevation of about 45 degrees. After rising above the clouds their angular motion became less and less until it ceased, when they appeared to be moving directly away from the earth at an elevation of about 75 degrees and in the direction west-northwest (true). It was noted that the color became less pronounced as the meteors gained in angular elevation. When sighted the largest meteor was in the lead followed by second in size at a distance of less than twice the diameter of the larger, and then by the third in size at a similar distance from the second in size. They appeared to be traveling in echelon, and so continued as long as in sight. The largest had an apparent area of about six suns. It was egg-shaped , the sharper end forward. This end was jagged in outline. The after end was regular and full in outline. The second and third meteors were round and showed no imperfections in shape. The second meteor was estimated to be twice the size of the sun in appearance and the third meteor about the size of the sun. When the meteors rose there was no change in relative positions nor was there at any time any evidence of rotation or tumbling of the larger meteor .I estimated the clouds to be not over 1 mile high. The near approach of these meteors to the surface and the subsequent flight away from the surface appear to be most remarkable, especially so as their actual size could not have been great. That they did come below the clouds and soar instead of continuing their southeasterly course is also equally certain, as the angular motion ceased and the color faded as they rose. The clouds in passing between the meteors and the ship completely obscured the former. Blue sky could be seen in the intervals between the clouds. The meteors were in sight over two minutes and were carefully observed by three people, whose accounts agree as to details. The officer of the deck, Acting Boatswain Frank Garvey, U.S.Navy, sighted the meteors and watched them, until they disappeared. He sent a messenger to me who brought an unintelligible message. When I arrived on the bridge the meteors had been obscured for about one half a minute." In 1905 some people living in Portland, Oregon saw a ufo come out of a heavy overcast and scream past the city. But Portland was not the only place that year that had ufos overhead. One interesting sighting in 1905 was that of a triangular ufo. What makes this so interesting is that many ufos of this shape are being sighted today. The sighting I am talking about occurred on a farm in Delaware. In 1906 a ufo was seen over Syracuse, New York. It was called a mystery meteor by those that saw it, but meteor was a misnomer. No meteor ever performed the maneuvers that this object did. It performed all sorts of turns, rolls and tumbles, changing direction many times. In 1907 one of my favorite events was recorded. A torpedo shaped ufo was sighted over the city of Burlington, Vermont. Some may say that it was most likely a zeppelin or blimp, but there was very little of this type of activity in the U.S. in those early years. Some very prominent citizens saw it such as a Bishop John S. Michaud, a former Governor, Alexander Woodbury and others. To their horror it exploded right before their eyes. In 1908 another ufo with a similar shape was seen over Bridgewater, Massachusetts. This one was black. When it was described it was called spherical shaped. Again many prominent citizens saw it. It was reported in the November 6, 1908 edition of the Bridgewater Independent. The paper called it a balloon or airship with powerful lights and said that it was hovering. There is no talk of any sound coming from it. It seems that hovering in a balloon would be difficult since it is subject to air currents. Was this a balloon or airship as the paper suggests and if so why didn't the witnesses describe it as such? In 1909 New Zealand had a ufo sighting. It was reported that a cigar shaped ufo was over the town of Dunedin and then flew over other towns along the coast. Several times during the year these ufos were seen over New Zealand. The ufos were illuminated. One man watched the object using a powerful telescope but he never reported the object as a balloon or blimp. All he would say was that it had a dark superstructure and what he believed were three lights on it. It returned to the same area several times. In 1910 people in the cities of Huntsville, Alabama and Chattanooga, Tennessee experienced seeing the same type of ufo that flew over New Zealand. The ufo hovered above both cities and shined a powerful light over both of them. It is easy to see how ufo reports in the early days could have been of primitive balloons and blimps but not all of the reports. The reports of meteors doing strange maneuvers can not be explained away that easily. In many cases the people making the reports were responsible people. If one were to ask the question "Were there ufos in the early part of the 20th century?" I think we would have to answer that with a yes, just as there were for the rest of the century. |
