When one looks at the folklore of many different nations they will find references to giants. Is this just a coincidence? Why giants, why couldn't it just be just as easily something else? Could it be that giants actually walked upon the Earth at one time? First of all, we have to figure out if giants could actually live. It seems to be quite possible. An example of this could be the giant squid. We weren't truly aware of its existence until just a few years ago. Oh we know that squids exist, people have been eating them for thousands of years, but giant squids were thought to exist usually only in tales told by seafarers. Then it happened, one was brought up from the depths. I say depths, because they are suspected of living in very deep water.

So we know that there are squid and giant squid. What about other fish species? It has been known for a long time, that if you keep some types of fish in a small tank, they will stay small, but if they are kept in a big tank, they will get much bigger. Could it be the same for humans? Could that be why humans on Earth all get to be about the same size with a few exceptions, but if they were on a larger planet would they grow to a larger height and weight? What about gravity, what role does that play in our size? If our planet had half the gravity of the Earth would we grow bigger, remain the same or be smaller? These are all very interesting questions. It may turn out that after humans colonize other planets and children begin to be born on them, that this will change humans in many different ways. We may be far more dependent on our surroundings than we suspect. If we colonize a planet that is bigger than Earth, will the humans there eventually grow to fit their surrounds? If they do grow, their brains will get bigger, will this make them smarter than your average, run of the mill Earth human? Maybe this is one of the secrets to improving the intelligence of the human race? Nature always seems to take a hand in things, so why should this be any different?

The ancient Greeks had stories of giants and indeed, the word giant comes from gigantes, a greek word which represented giant in their tales. We tend to think of these stories of giants as being fables, but we thought the same about the stories of Homer, and we all know now that many of them spoke of true places and events. Could the stories of giants have any truth to them? The giants that the ancient Greeks spoke of were said to be sons of either Uranus and Gaia or of a virgin Gaia. A third area that these giants could have come from, according to the Greeks, was the blood that fell to the earth after the castration of Uranus. Some of the giants revolted and attacked heaven while others didn't participate. Eventually the Gods asked Hercules to kill the giants and he killed them all. Here is something interesting, some of the giants were said to grow every year. They were said to grow a fathom in height and a cubit in width. A cubit is listed at either 12" or 20" depending on what measurement is used. It can be from the elbow to the end of the middle finger, 20 inches or from the elbow to the base of the hand, 12 inches. A fathom is 1.8288 meters or 6 feet. Were the ancient Greeks really trying to explain something that they didn't understand that really happened and did the truth get twisted to include the gods? Could it be that they found bones of giant humans and tried to explain where they came from?

Some of the ancient Jews are said to have believed in the concept of giants. This belief was spurred on by the Babylonian captivity, because of the exposure to the Zoroastrians. The belief was that there was an enemy to the Jewish people and Zachariah had said this in 520 B.C. It was believed that sons of God had sired giants by having relations with mortal women. They had disobeyed God by doing this. This reference was maybe the first to involve Satan. Where did the ancient Jews get the idea that giants existed? Could they have gotten this idea from the ancient Greeks? I think that the Babylonians had the idea first, but I could be wrong on this point. Some say they got it from even more ancient races that came before them.

Many other ancient races have tales that involve giants. Giant human remains have been found in China, Java and many other places. Minnesota had ten giant skeletons of men and women found in a mound in 1883. All were of gigantic size. Same for Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Utah, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Kansas, and Nevada, Some of these states had several finds of this type. I just thought that I would mention a few in our part of the world.

Aaron Wright discovered giants right here in Ohio, in 1800. He had purchased a piece of land for farming and it had a mysterious mound on it. The farm was about four acres. He noticed that there were slight depressions in the surface of the land. They were in straight rows and covered his land. His land contained two to three thousand graves. As he examined the graves and exposed the bones, he saw that they were so old that they had become black and crumbled on exposure to air. The mounds and the graves had no connection. In the mound also were graves. In them he found very large bones, bones that would have belonged to giants. In 1820 a report was published named "Description of the Antiquities Discovered in the State of Ohio." The report was prepared by a person who never saw the mound and relied on reports of others. He said of the mound builders that they were, "people of small stature," and that reports of larger skeletons uncovered among their ruins "were the exception, not the rule". This is just another example of a discovery not being taken seriously. The discovery is known as the Giants of Conneaut.

It is said that the oldest culture in the world are the Ngarinyin Aborigines of Australia. I decided to do a little research to see if they have any tales of giants in their history. The first thing that I found out is that artwork from 176,000 years ago is said to show people and giant meat eating Kangaroos and Wombats. There is a story of 2 lazy sisters who disobey their people and are punished by a giant who followed them. Are you ready for this? Fossils that were found, indicate that before the aborigines, there were humans in Australia that might have been as tall as 12 feet and weighed up to 600 pounds. Here is what was found, huge stone artifacts, including giant clubs, pounders, knives, chisels and hand axes. A giant tooth, a molar, was fossilized. All of the tools were too big and heavy for ordinary people to use. In the folk lore of the aborigines they state that when they got to Australia it was inhabited by many races of man, including giants. Could this be actual evidence of the existence of giants? I wouldn't go that far, but I would say this is a very good indication. This is not the first time a human tooth of gigantic proportions has been found. A molar was previously found in 1924, that was six times larger than a modern man's molar. In 1939, another giant molar was found that indicated that the person it came from had to be about 13 feet tall.

Finding remains of ancient giants is frowned upon by most scientists. These things have been found in China, the Near East, Africa, Asia, North America and Australia, so far. Like so many other types of finds, they are mostly ignored because they don't fit into the scientific picture of where we came from and what we are about. One has to remember that there was a period that existed on Earth, where everything was extremely large. Why couldn't man ultimately date back to that period and have been large also? Is this being ignored, because as with other finds, it would make man older than he is supposed to be to make everything fit in the box nice and neatly? One of the clubs found actually weighed 21 pounds. You can't tell me that a normal sized human could use this effectively in a hunt or battle. Another find was a huge hand axe weighing over 25 pounds. The layer of soil that some of these tools has been taken out of was accurately dated to 240,000 ago. The measurements of one of the teeth indicate that the individual that it came from could have been 25 feet tall and weighed about 1,000 pounds. Did giants live on this Earth? What do you think?
