Photo, Animation and Drawing Source: NASA/CXC/SAO

I am always interested in space and things space related. I came across some interesting animations from NASA and decided to include them here. They involve either the Chandra observatory, the Hubble telescope or both.

Before we start I think it is important to know exactly what Chandra is and its mission. Chandra is an X-ray Observatory, which was launched and deployed by Space Shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999. It is the most sophisticated X-ray observatory built to date. Chandra is designed to observe X-rays from high-energy regions of the universe, such as the remnants of exploded stars. (text from NASA) Below is a drawing of where Chandra is located:

Hubble orbits 600 kilometers (375 miles) above Earth, working around the clock to unlock the secrets of the Universe. It uses excellent pointing precision, powerful optics, and state-of-the-art instruments to provide stunning views of the Universe that cannot be made using ground-based telescopes or other satellites. (text from NASA) If you would like to know exactly where Hubble is at the moment you can click HERE to track it. The photo below shows Hubble in orbit above the Earth.

If you need a viewer for the following videos, you can down load one HERE for free. Remember a fast connection is required. Use your browser's back button to return to this page after each movie.

The next image I am posting because I think it is interesting. It is the image of Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Earth other than our own sun.

I hope you enjoyed the animations, I though they were really good. NASA did a fine job on them.
