Graphic Source: Me I guess most of us have heard plenty of talk about ghosts, spirits, apparitions and such. Call them what you want, but they all come down to sightings of people that are deceased. While this is a topic of discussion on many different shows on television, I thought that it might be appropriate to talk about the ghosts of our four legged friends that seem to appear in different places. This seems to go against what many religious organizations have told us. If people are the only ones with souls, how can the spirit of a dog or cat even exist? Anyway I am not writing this article to start an argument on religion, so let's get on with it. There seems to be an inordinate amount of ghost dog sightings inside cemeteries, One of these dogs is known as Grim and he has been credited with chasing many different people away from different cemeteries. He is said to be black and very scary. Those that have seen him say that he is very angry. If you believe this, it makes you wonder why an angry black dog spirit would be protecting human graves. Some people believe that the angry black dog is really the soul of a human condemned to guard the cemetery until the end of time. The legend seems to be particularly true for British cemeteries and cemeteries in the U.S. where slaves were buried. Hey perhaps the black dog in the slave cemetery is the former slave owner, condemned to all eternity to guard those slaves that he was cruel to in life?
Graphic Source: Me One woman took a photo of her dog in the woods and when she looked at the photo she was amazed to find that next to the dog were two transparent dogs sitting there quite happily. They were apparently the spirits of dogs that seemed to be glad to see a living dog. There was no way to tell from the photo if the real dog was aware of their presence. Here is a question for someone, if the spirit of a dog or cat does exist, would it know that it was deceased? If it didn't, why are there not more of them around, walking up to humans and wagging their tails or rubbing against their legs? I guess the question boils down to, if spirits do exist, is their intelligence the same that it was when they were alive? Would a dog be no smarter or dumber then in life? Ghost dogs are not the only ghost animals that have been reported. One very interesting report comes from a small town in Denver. Every once in a while a ghost cowboy is seen riding his ghost horse. The story goes that in life he had appeared at midnight for a shoot out and now he is condemned to repeat this appearance several times a month. People who have seen the cowboy report that they can hear the firing of two shots before the two ghosts vanish. The ghost of the man was said to be that of Billy “Silver Gun” Beetie who died in 1832 after he was involved in a shoot out with a cattle thief named Rod MacToddy. Six years later Rod MacToddy was hung and it is said that he sometimes turns up for the midnight challenge. While it seems that the most sighted animal ghosts are dogs, then cats, and finally horses, many other types of animal ghosts have been observed including birds. Many appear as smokey silhouettes of the shape of what they were when they were alive. There is more to this however and that is the fact that some people have seen ghost animals reenacting certain events from their lives. For example a dog that had died because he had been hit by a bus, was said to have reappeared before that bus, but this time the bus driver saw the ghost dog and was able to stop. There are some very strange stories about ghost animals and one that I remember reading about had to do with a woman that was getting on in years. She left directions that when she died, her two pet dogs were to be exhumed from their graves in the back yard and put in the grave with her. She died and was burried and so were her pets in a cemetery. From that time on people have reported hearing dogs scampering and barking around the grave of the deceased woman. One of the things that paranormal investigators are saying is that they think that living animals might be more sensitive to the presence of spirits than humans are. There are stories of animals seemingly reacting to unseen forces. For example there were two cats that grew up together. Unfortunately one died and the other became very morose. One day while the family was sitting in the living room, the surviving cat began to play as he used to with the cat that died. He even purred. While no one in the room saw anything like a ghost cat, the live cat's actions would seem to indicate that his companion was back. From that point on, the cat would repeat this strange behavior several times a month. There is a story about a white pig that had a very long snout that followed two men around a village in Britain. Everywhere they went the pig followed. They knew it was the same pig because of the long snout and odd color for a pig. At the end of the day they made a stop at a house for a few minutes and when they came out the pig was gone. They asked everyone they could find, but no one saw the pig. It turned out that the village had just gone through a bout of Pig Fever and all pigs in that village and surrounding ones had been killed. Had they seen a ghost Pig? Many scientists believe that energy never dies, it just changes form. That is what a lot of paranormal investigators base their opinions on when they say that ghosts exist. Even Einstein believed that energy never died and Edison was even building a machine that he thought could contact the dead as if they were just waiting in another room to converse. Are there a lot of strange events that can not be explained satisfactorily? Yes. Does this mean that ghosts are real? Not necessarily. During a Gallup poll 38% of Americans said they believed in ghosts, while 27% said that they weren't sure. |
