Imaginary Friends

Did you ever notice how many children have imaginary friends? Almost every parent knows that this is a normal thing for small children. They make up names and claim that they are playing with them, but could there be more to this phenomena? Some people believe that there could be in at least some cases. I didn't give this much thought in the past, but a lot of material is out there from different groups, that relate some of this imaginary friend stuff to a couple of different causes. The first is just what it sounds like, a made up friend, because children like to play make believe. The second is attributed to reincarnation and it is suggested that there is some sort of a link between the two. The third cause is said to be strictly paranormal and they go on to state that young children can see things that we can no longer see, such as spirits and such. Lastly an imaginary friend sometimes functions as the person a child can blame for their inappropriate actions, such as “I didn't break it, it was -----.”

When a child uses an imaginary friend as an excuse for misdeeds, it is learning how to make excuses that it thinks others will believe for what it did, so that he or she won't get punished. While we laugh at this when it happens, it is a sort of training for lying and has to be corrected. There are a few cases where children had an imaginary friend and when the details of this friend were spoken about by the child and checked by the parents, it was found that a real person with the same name had lived nearby in past years and died. There was no way the child could have known about this and yet, as in some cases of suspected reincarnation, the facts were right on the money. How do we explain things like this? I know that some people have said that the child might have heard the parents talking about this person, or saw something on television about them, yet there are many cases where this is definitely not the case and the entire thing remains one of the great mysteries.

The next part of the imaginary friend sequence is the part where some say that children can see things that we can no longer see. There are plenty of articles about this and I would like to talk about a couple of cases with you. One woman states that she moved into a rather old house in the Midwest with her family and one of her children was about five years old. Her daughter began insisting that there was a little girl in the house with her. The mother believed that this was just a make believe friend. One day a family member was over and told the mother that she thought it was nice that her daughter had someone over to play with. The mother asked her what she was talking about, since no one was over. The relative repeated that she saw another girl playing tea party with the daughter. Her mother quickly went to the area where the little girl was playing and there was a space next to her and dolls all around. Then she heard the other voice and it was not coming from the little girl. When the little girl was asked to describe her friend, she said that she wore high buttoned shoes and hated them along with high collars. She went on to say that the girl had red hair with a bow in the back and was sickly. It turned out that a girl that fit that description had died in the house about 100 years ago. The little girl would be constantly woken up by the other girl, who would now change shapes.

Paranormal investigators have said repeatedly that young children can see spirits much more easily than we can. They claim that the reason for this is that their minds are much more open to things than the minds of older children or adults. To believe this statement you would have to believe in spirits in the first place. The truth of the matter is that many people do and some of them even include those that say they don't. As we learn more about life and our technology improves, we don't really seem to be learning much more about what happens after death. That is not to say that we haven't been told by the various religions, but if we are seeking scientific proof, the closest thing we have is EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena. This is where a person makes a recording of the voice of a deceased person and yet, no one can hear it as it is happening. When the recorder is rewound and played back the voice can be heard. Since even this has never been done under scientific conditions by scientists, to my knowledge, there really is no way to confirm that is really what happened.

Taking this a step further, could it be possible that children, young children, can see into another dimension? Yes this really sounds way out, but there are some who think that this might be true. They believe that we are surrounded by other dimensions, and we are oblivious to them. They claim that as our bodies evolve from baby to adult, we are constantly losing different abilities that are driven by our brains. They feel that our body's energy is going into our growth instead. This causes some of the energy that is being supplied to our brains to be diverted to other tasks. There is no proof of this yet, but it almost sounds as if it could be true. Growing does take a lot of energy. Some believe that the small brain of a child has more energy concentrated in certain centers that allow for them to have this vision.

The child was only about a year and a half old. She was a little girl and very smart for her age. Every time she would be brought up to the second floor of the house, she would look into the hall, wave and say hello. There was never anyone in the hall. This in itself does prove much, until we look at the different things that were happening in that home for years. The person who lived on the second floor would constantly complain about hearing footsteps above the ceiling. There was no attic in this house. Footsteps could be heard going up and down the basement stairs at all hours of the night, when everyone was asleep. The hot water would turn itself on in the bathroom and when you went into there it would be running and everything would be steamed up. The faucet was tight and it took a little effort to turn it on by hand. Electrical plugs were continuously being pulled from their sockets. Sometimes every plug would be pulled out. A very black shadow was seen floating across the bedroom at night when the room was unlit. The shadow was so black that it could be seen even in a dark room. Could the child have seen something that the adults couldn't?

One small child who was about 5 years old, kept telling her parents that there was an entire family in her room. She said that there was a mommy and daddy and two children. She said that the mommy and daddy were looking at television and the two children were playing with her toys. She could not be dissuaded from believing this. Her mother stated that when she was a little girl, she too saw spirits and talked to them. Another little boy was outside in the yard with his mother and the mother's friend when he said that he was going back into his room to play with two brothers. His mother asked him what he was talking about and he said there were two brothers in his room. The mother let him go and she and her friend peeked into the room. She could see the boy talking and laughing, but the room looked empty. She was freaked out. The mother later found out that two brothers had lived there and died.

Is there really anything to all this? Maybe yes and maybe no, you will have to decide for yourself.
