Does The Paranormal Exist?

The Paranormal is something that some people believe in and some don't. Some of the people that do believe won't admit it in public. Sometimes things will happen that seem to have no explanation, so they will be assigned a paranormal one. This explanation will usually ignore any other explanation that doesn't seem apparent to the one that is seeking the explanation in the first place. When I interviewed the Amazing Randi, a famous magician, he told me that he had been offering a million dollar reward to anyone that could perform a paranormal act that he could not duplicate using trickery. No one has ever collect this and indeed some famous psychics have declined to even try. Yet there are many stories of paranormal events that seem scary when we look at them, but the problem is that they could just be baloney. Keeping this in mind, I would like to relate some of those stories to you for your entertainment.

An article appeared on the Internet that talked about a cursed mirror. The mirror was said to have been given to a man named Louis in 1743 and bore the inscription on it that indicated this. I guess mirrors were a lot more valuable then. In 1997 the mirror disappeared from an antique dealer and it is said that this upset him and other antique dealers so much that they made a combined statement not to look into the mirror. Why in the world would they do this? They claimed that the mirror had been owned by 38 people since it was made and all 38 died after looking into the mirror. Not only that, but they all had cerebral hemorrhages. I wonder, if the story is true, if anyone examined the mirror to see if it had any sharp edges and was treated with any poison or such? This certainly would account for all those deaths. Poison was very popular in earlier times. Anyway the mirror had been put into a police storage room when it was found, but it had disappeared from there prompting the message. It was said that the mirror remembers its previous owners and you can see them in it.

What is going on with all those EVPs? EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomena. The idea is to talk to a ghost who may be in a certain area and even if you hear nothing in return, you may get a voice on a recorder. There is a flood of these recordings on the internet. Interestingly there is no way to validate something like this, it has to be taken on faith. So what are we being asked to do? When we listen to one on the Internet, we are being asked to accept the fact that the voice is a true spirit, that the recording was not altered, that the voice is not a human and that the whole thing is not a hoax and we are being asked to accept this fact from people that we most likely don't know. It seems to me that the only way this kind of thing can be accepted is if you try making a EVP and get a voice on the recorder when no one else is around. At least that will give you the personal satisfaction of knowing that it works, even if no one else will believe you.

What is going on in New Hampshire? A few years ago a family in that state ran into what they believed were paranormal events in their home. Keep in mind that such events have been reported since the dawn of time and there are still some that can not be explained. Anyway this family was not only hearing voices in their home, they were seeing things like apparitions and even had objects lift and fly across their rooms. I guess this would be more than enough to make you want to leave. There was no problem until they decided to dig on their property. Many times it is reported that digging or renovations to a home can cause this type of thing to happen. Interestingly enough some people are now saying that it is not only this home that is haunted, but it is the entire town of Kingston, New Hampshire. Some of the other ghosts that are said to have been actually seen there are a man that seemed to be luminous, scaring a witness who ran for his life. There are reports of a ghost of a woman who has part of her head and arm sliced off. Another report told of the ghost of a man smoking a pipe. Doesn't he know that smoking can kill you? Oops I forgot.

Point Pleasant, West Virginia is the home of a famous curse, know as the Cornstalk curse. No it has nothing to do with corn but rather an Indian chief named Chief Cornstalk. This area of the county is said to have more than its share of paranormal events. This is the area where the famous Mothman was said to inhabit. A stone's throw from Point Pleasant is Athens County, Ohio which is said to contain the most haunted city in the state. Is this just a coincidence? Before the revolution, the indians banded together under one chief to keep the white man out, this was Chief Cornstalk. We drove the indians off into the hills and such and built a fort. They made peace with us after awhile. The British began to rally the indians again but Cornstalk did not want to attack the colonists, so he went to the fort to try and broker peace again. He and his companions were taken as hostages to try and prevent the indians from attacking. When a soldier was shot by an indian, the other soldiers disobeyed orders, broke into the room where the chief was being kept and killed him and his companions. As the chief lay dying, here is what he said, I was the border man’s friend. Many times I have saved him and his people from harm. I never warred with you, but only to protect our wigwams and lands. I refused to join your paleface enemies with the red coats. I came to the fort as your friend and you murdered me. You have murdered by my side, my young son.... For this, may the curse of the Great Spirit rest upon this land. May it be blighted by nature. May it even be blighted in its hopes. May the strength of its peoples be paralyzed by the stain of our blood.” Supposedly this is why the area has so much paranormal activity. Here are some of the things blamed on the curse:
°1907 Coal mine disaster that killed 310
°1944 Tornado that killed 150
°1967 Silver Bridge collapse that killed 46
°1968 Plane crash that killed 35
°1970 Plane crash that killed 70
°1976 Jail blow up killed 5

The most haunted hotel in the country is said to be the Hotel Provincial in New Orleans. Many people who occupied the honeymoon suite have had ghostly occurrences as well as people that stayed in other areas. One of the strange things about the hotel is that it has 115 rooms and no two are alike. People have reported hearing a child crying in one of the rooms, but nothing is ever found. The hotel was once a Confederate hospital and maids have complained many times of blood on the sheets. Many guests have seen four men in their room that are standing over a table, two are taking notes and one is sawing something and when the guests see them they stop what they are doing are stare at the guests, before the guests either run away or the men fade away. It is thought that they are doctors from the Civil War performing amputations.

Are these stories true or not? I have no way of knowing if all are true, but I can tell you this, many guests that came to the Hotel Provincial report seeing the same four guys and yet they didn't know about this before coming to the hotel. The same goes for the child crying that isn't there.
