Mysterious Objects And Symbols

I have always been interested in historical mysteries. Our ancestors have left us with a lot of things that we really either can't explain, or figure out how, or why they made them. Some say that the pyramids fall into this category, though most people think that they can answer two of the above three things that I pointed out. The problem is that no one has really been able to tell for sure how the pyramids were built. We know that the stones weighed many tons and as the pyramid got higher and higher it seems almost impossible for a people at this stage of their civilization to lift and raise those heavy stones. There are many other wonders that have been passed down to us. Here are a few of them.

One of these wonders is the Codex Gigas. You may have heard it called the devil's bible. This is by far the largest book ever made. It weighs about one hundred and sixty five pounds and has 600 pages made from calf skins. At one time this book was considered to be the eighth wonder of the world. It must have taken a few men just to lift if off the shelf, after all it weighed as much as a full grown man. Why would anyone want to write it? I am going to go a little further with that question and ask why someone would want to write a book that contains not one subject, but many different diverse subjects? Yes that is right, the book covers a lot of territory physically and literally.

What exactly is in this monster book? For one thing there is a complete Latin version of the bible, except for Acts and Revelation. It also contains history, medical cures, and even criminology. It is believed that this book was created in the 13th century by the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice in Bohemia. The Swedish army captured the book during the 30 years war and it now resides in Sweden. The book's cover is wood covered in leather. The book had also contained 320 vellum sheets that were removed, but no one knows why, or by who. There are guesses why, but they are just guesses. It is believed that the actual person who created the book was Herman the Recluse who lived in the Benedictine monastery. It is believed that the book took over 20 years to write. Legend states the creator of the book broke his vows and was to be walled up alive, but got a one day stay of execution to write a book glorifying the monastery forever, including all human knowledge. When he saw that he could not complete the book on time, he prayed to Satan for help and in exchange pledged his soul and that is supposedly why the picture of Satan is in the book.

We as modern humans pride ourselves on being smart. This intelligence is thought to be much higher than that of our ancestors and when we add the aid of computers, we think that we can figure out almost anything. Realistically this is not true and one large example of this is the Phaistos Disk, an object that is believed to come from 1800 B.C. The disk contains hieroglyphics from the ancient civilization of Crete and has eluded all attempts to translate it. Admiral Spratt of the Royal Navy discovered the exact location of Phaistos. Some experts say the inscriptions are all in Linear which is a code that is not understood. This city was home to one of the wisest men of the ancient world, his name was Epimenidis. No one is entirely even sure where this object was manufactured. It can be seen on display at the archaeological museum of Heraklion in Crete, Greece.

Just about everyone knows about the Conquistadors and how they came to South America and conquered everything they saw, but how many people know about the historian that followed them? He wrote about everything he saw and one of those things remains unexplained, even today. He wrote about a very brilliant white object that illuminated the entire surrounding area for quite some distance. Did the Indians of that area discover a light source that is still unknown today?

Ogham

Why are archaeologists finding Ogham inscribed on many boulders and rocks throughout England and Ireland? Ogham, also known as Ogam and Ogom, is an ancient Irish script. No one seems to know why and how this script was developed. Not much is known about this language and some speculate that it was the language of magic, or maybe the druids wrote using it. The language is interesting for the fact that it is made up of straight or slanted lines. This language was never used in ancient texts, it is just too bulky, but it is found on columns and pillars. It is believed that Ogham does not predate the 4th century. One theory about the creation of this language states that it was created by the Irish so that no one else could understand it that had knowledge of the Latin alphabet.

Our world is full of strange mysteries. There are so many that entire series of television shows have been based on them. Sometimes we see the same one covered over and over again. I know that I get tired of looking at shows of how the pyramids were built, don't you? On the other hand, there are some things out there that most of us, including myself, are just not that familiar with and it is nice to look into these once in a while. Does our future lay in solving all the mysteries of the past first? What I find strange is that sometimes we find outstanding technological objects and yet they were never built up or even acknowledged. Can you imagine where the human race would have been today if we had acted on some of this stuff then?
