Are We Living In A Dream?

There has always been a few people throughout history that believed that life is not real. They have said that life is nothing more than our imaginations making up scenarios. I can't help but think that maybe this is where the idea came from for the movie The Matrix. According to these people, we are all energy, energy that is dreaming that we are corporeal beings. Yes I know that this is extremely way out there and ninety nine percent of people reading this will think that this is just a bunch of nonsense and truthfully, I find it hard to believe myself. If this were true it would have tremendous implications for us. It could mean that every person we have ever known only existed in our imagination. That certainly would be a terrible thought, especially when it involved beloved family members and such.

Another thing that would come to mind is why would something like this be happening? It would certainly indicate that some higher being was controlling us. Most religions teach us that God is the supreme being and eventually if we live a good life, we will be rewarded by going to heaven and if we don't, we better get some fireproof clothing. Granted, there are an awful lot of mysteries connected with life, some are so complex that we have no way of ever solving them using our puny minds. One such mystery is how could the universe have always been? We like to believe that everything has a beginning and an end. Any other concept hurts our minds. We see the proof all around us that everything is limited and nothing lasts forever, yet if all this is just our imagination, than this concept is in error. What if it is our imagination and it turns out that everything lasts forever, because energy never dies as Einstein said.

If on the extremely rare chance those that believe that this life is only a dream, more or less, are correct, then there is certainly something else going on. What I find interesting is the fact that just about everything that we think that we know would be completely wrong. The physical laws that were developed would be wrong, because there would be no physical world and maybe not even a physical universe, but something else that would be a complete mystery to us. Lately some scientists have stated that they believe that there is another dimension that contains energy. At least one inventor, John Hutchison, has done work in this area and claims that he was able to tap into this endless energy, but only on an irregular basis. In other words, sometime the experiments work and sometimes they don't. This has not stopped the US military from becoming very interested in his work.

Could it be that there are other dimensions besides the one we think we live in and they are all energy of one sort or another, leading us to the theory that our dimension is really an energy dimension also and we only think that it is one of matter. There is a flip side to this coin however and that is, how can we trust any facts that we find out, if this is all an illusion? That would mean that maybe there are no other dimensions and maybe we are in the only dimension. This sort of stuff really boggles the mind. This might account for things like the paranormal. Maybe those people that believe they have seen spirits might have actually seen what we really look like? I am not talking about dead beings or anything like that, but beings made entirely of energy.

Could it be that some higher form of life is testing us with illusions to see what are true natures are? This supreme being would be known as God. We hear tales of reincarnation quite often. Many children under the age of five seem to recall all sorts of information about past lives. Could it be that they are not really past lives, but past dreams? I wonder how many people that investigate this stuff would ever believe that was possible? My guess is not very many, I am sure you would agree with me on this. I personally would hate for this theory to be correct, it would mean that all the progress that man has made over the centuries was for nothing. This might be wrong however, because if you take this a step further, maybe there was no past and we only imagine that also. Could it be that a past was created for us, so that we would all think that we had something in common? Yet it could be, as I said before, that we are imagining everything and everything in our universe might just be one being thinking that they are interacting with others.

I want to make something perfectly clear, just because I am writing about this, does not mean that I believe it, or agree with the theory. I am putting it out there as an exercise in thought. I want to show what some others believe. Chances are that this theory is nothing more than a fallacy, but there is also the slight glimmer of chance in everything, no matter how strange it sounds. Perhaps a very tiny piece of the theory might be true, lets say the part that says we are energy beings. We know that the human body works on electricity. We also know that most religions say we have a soul. Could it be that the soul is composed of energy and is released on death? Most of the world believes that our souls are released at death, so is it so far fetched to believe that they are energy?

It we are sort of dreaming, do we wake up somewhere along the line and get glimpses of what things are really like? Could it be that some people have been committed to institutions for talking about what they saw? Wouldn't it be something if many of the people that were institutionalized were sane and some of the so called sane people were not? I can't help but think that some of the politicians should have been institutionalized long ago.

As for my part, I am pretty well convinced that we are living a real life, with real people and real events. Until I am convinced otherwise, I will go on thinking this way, as I believe we all should. If I didn't think this way, what would be the point of life and relationships?
