We all know that people disappear. Sometimes these disappearances can be on the bizarre side, or should I say at least out of the ordinary. One boy was on his property and it was snowing. He was asked to walk to the well to get some water. The weather was not the greatest and it was snowing. In 1909 it was hard work being a farmer, not that it isn't now. The boy decided he had better get going, there was no sense putting off the walk since things were only getting worse. He left for the well. A little while later his family heard terrible screams coming from above their heads. A group of men went out to investigate and what they saw was very mysterious. There was footprints heading to the well, but they stopped about halfway there. There were no other footprints and no sign of a struggle of any kind. When we put this together with the fact that the screaming was heard to come from overhead, it seems like some giant type of bird whisked this poor boy away. No sign of him was ever found. This event occurred in the British Isles.

A lot of passengers have just disappeared from cruise ships. This fact has been repressed since if it were to get around, it could hurt the passenger business. In a five year period over 30 people that boarded ships were not on the ships when they docked. This could be due to several factors. The first that comes to mind is the crime factor. There have been a few cases where crew members have killed passengers. One has to remember that the crew is gathered up from all over the world and some might be criminals. Passengers can also kill other passengers. Another factor is that some people, only a few, go on a cruise to commit suicide. They have their minds made up before boarding, that they will jump off the ship. Then there are those that just fall off. There have also been a few accidents that resulted in death. The figure of 30 plus people going missing in five years is the figure that is given by the cruise line industry, many say that the figure of missing people is much higher. The grown daughter of a passenger disappeared from a ship and the only thing that was found was a beaded purse with many of the beads missing. Some think that this showed that a struggle took place, because the beads were very hard to get off.

The year was 1815 and there was a prisoner in a Prussian prison. He was in jail for a crime that we hear a lot of today, identity theft. He had impersonated his employer. His employer had died from a stroke and the man had thought that this was a great opportunity for him to reap some rewards. He had been chained to other prisoners in front and back and was walking into the exercise yard in view of several guards. Then a strange thing began to happen. He began to fade in front of everyone, the other prisoners and the guards. He just kept fading until he completely disappeared. Where did this guy go? Was this a voluntary or involuntary act and if voluntary, how was it done? If involuntary did he walk into some sort of vortex? How could he do that while being in the middle of a chain gang? It seems to me that if there is such a thing as a vortex and he entered it, other prisoners would have entered it also.

One poor man had been paralyzed by a massive stroke. He lived in Great Britain and disappeared in 1763. This was a man that was about 60 years old and paralyzed. His sister used to put him outside the house on warm summer days in his nightshirt with a folded greatcoat to sit on. He was not alone however, as a farm was across the road and it had many workers who could see him. One day his sister heard an approaching storm and went out to get him, but he was gone. The only thing there was his greatcoat that he had been sitting on. An investigation was conducted, but no trace of him was ever found. Some found this case so interesting that another investigation was conducted in 1933, again with no positive results. What happened to this man? He couldn't talk and was in plain sight of the workers on the other farm. It was as if he had disappeared into thin air.

Terrified, a man told the police that his wife had disappeared. The incident happened in 1975. He said that he was driving through the Lincoln Tunnel. He had come from New Jersey and was heading to New York. Condensation had built up on the windshield and back window and he said that he pulled the car over so that he could wipe the windshield. His wife went into the back of the car to clean the rear window. After the man wiped the windshield off, he turned around to see how his wife was doing and no one was there. Frantic he looked all around the car, but she was gone. The police conducted an investigation, but could find no evidence of foul play or of the man's wife. She had simply disappeared from the rear seat of the car, according to this guy.

What is all this stuff about? Can it be possible that some people just vanish into thin air? There are those that believe that what we see all around us, including our interactions with other people is just some sort of mirage. They feel that what we are seeing are sophisticated images that make us think that they are real and they feel that if this is the case, then any image could just be turned off. Wow, that is way out. Others believe in abductions by extraterrestrials and that they have been stealing people for thousands of years for some purpose that we have no idea of. A splinter group of these people believe that people are being abducted to fight wars for the aliens and are perfect for this, since we are intelligent enough to learn how to use their weapons. Then there is the group that thinks God or the devil is somehow involved with disappearances. Let's not forget the spontaneous human combustion group that believes that humans can combust and thus disappear.

I do not know why some people disappear, but I do know that most disappear for quite ordinary reasons like crime, running away, committing suicide and starting a new life. It is true however that there are a few cases, very few, that seem to indicate something else was in play and these are most interesting cases of all.
