Honey Bee

Here we are two and one half years after the bee die out was discovered and we are still no closer to solving the problem than we were then. Researchers are saying that this is a very complicated problem. As the research continues into the problem more questions arise than answers. It certainly does make one wonder if we will lose our entire honeybee population. As some have said, if you lose the bee, civilization will disappear. Researchers are now saying that there are lots of things killing bees and it is very hard to find the exact problem that is making bees disappear. The reason that honeybees are the preferred pollinators, is that they contain colonies of over 20,000 bees yet bumble bees have colonies of only abut 200. One researcher stated, "We have not set up very good environmental conditions for our bees, If you want to see rapid disease transmission, you go to a day care center; look at male prisoners who use intravenous drugs or look at honeybee colonies, which are cramped and stress bees." The disease that bees are suffering has been given a name, it is called Colony Collapse Disorder.

What happened to Rose Migdal? The strange case of Rose Migdal has puzzled police and her family for over eleven years. One day she just disappeared, leaving a 14 year old son. She had made her way from Riverton, Wyoming and turned up in a motel in Idaho. She drove there in her 1992 Chevrolet and checked into the motel for one day. The next day it is said that she plopped down almost $600 and told the clerk she wanted to check in for a month. The clerk commented to the police that she had been flashing a lot of money around and indeed the sheriff at the time thought that she had been murdered for her money. Her car had been found out of gas and locked with money scattered on the ground. The windshield wipers had been mangled and the car was on the edge of a desert. All this time no body was discovered and even though there was DNA evidence at the scene, because someone had urinated near the car and had also left soiled toilet paper, no money was approved for tests. This brings us to today. A skull was found by a herder recently. Mrs. Migdal did have a history of mental illness and had tried to commit suicide in the past according to the Times News. The case is now being opened. Experts say that a person committing suicide wants to leave a body behind, so they do not think that this is what happened. Footprints were found leading away from the car. A new sheriff was elected and he has now contacted the sheriff that was in office at the time and found out that there was a murder suspect and he is going to pursue the matter.

Sometimes things are seen that can not be accounted for. We could live in a location for many years and then one day see something that we can not explain and have never seen previously. Such was the case of the very strange mist that was photographed off the coast of Sussex, England. The mist looked like mountains off in the distance and occurred on December 23, 2008. What was it? No one really knows, but it just might turn out to be a very rare mirage, or reflection of something hundreds of miles away.

Thousands of shoes mysteriously appeared to have been dumped on a highway in Florida. No one is claiming ownership and no one is coming forward with any information. What do you do with thousands of shoes? The answer is simple, they are being given to a charity in Nashville to distribute to the needy. That just goes to show that sometimes an annoyance to one group of people can be a blessing to another group. The shoes are being sent to Haiti.

There is a wall in Northern Georgia that can be found in Fort Mountain State Park. It is made of stone and is 855 feet long. As a matter of fact that is the wall that gives the park the name Fort Mountain. There is a plaque on the wall giving the credit for its construction to prince Madoc and his Welsh followers, but most archaeologists do not agree with this assumption. The local Indians have a legend that states that the wall was built by a mysterious band of Moon-eyed people. It turns out that there are many of these types of structures all over our country. And they have been dated from 200 B.C. To 600 A.D.If we believe the plaque, then the wall was built around 1170 A.D. by a prince named Madoc of whom there is no record of ever leaving his homeland. As you can see, 1170 A.D. is far from the date that was given by experts for the wall's construction. Those who believe the Welsh built the wall base this partly on a supposed historical fact that the first governor of Tennessee supposedly said that in 1782 he was told by an Indian chief that the wall was built by white people called the Welsh who lived in the region before the Cherokee. So much for Christopher Columbus.

While not being exactly exciting news, since most of us knew it already, a recent study has confirmed that the universe is continuing to expand. There is more to the study however. The study showed that the universe is expanding at an ever increasing speed. This shoots down those that had proposed a theory called the “Void Theory”. A scientist explained this theory this way, “the earth is at the centre of a region in the universe which is very empty, with few stars and galaxies in it. The problem is if this alternate theory is true, you will not be able to explain supernova observations made recently," It looks like the universe will finish its days as a cold and dark place with heavenly bodies so far apart from each other that even the light from them may take billions of years to reach the closest object. This was predicted in a study a few years ago and it seems more plausible today than ever before.

A new study has come out that seems to confirm the fact that when athlete swimmers state that the water is behaving badly, that they could be correct. Some athletes have even stated that the water is evil at times. It turns out that the Royal Netherlands institute for Sea Research has found an effect called 'dead water'. In the ocean, dead water is caused by fresh water melting into the ocean from a glacier. It causes two layers of water. When a ship is sailing over it, waves are created between the layers and the ship slows down. When a ship was caught in this dead water in 1893, its captain entered this into the ship's log, "Fram (the name of the ship) appeared to be held back, as if by some mysterious force, and she did not always answer the helm. We made loops in our course, turned sometimes right around, tried all sorts of antics to get clear of it, but to very little purpose." The captain of that ship was Fridtjof Nansen and he was the one to name the effect.

Lucrezia Borgia

For years experts were wondering who the portrait was of that hangs in a major Australian art gallery. The painting had been acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria and was considered a portrait of a youth by an unknown artist. The gallery purchased it in 1965. It turned out that now it is believed that this is the only surviving portrait of Lucrezia Borgia. She was the illegitimate daughter of Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, who later became Pope Alexander VI. The painting is now considered to be by Dosso Dossi a famous Renaissance artist. The Borgias were one of the most corrupt families of the time and one of the most infamous. Lucrezia had been married off three different times for political advantage. Many rumors of extravagant parties by this family have endured along with allegations of poisonings, incest and murder.
