Swamps

Swamps are notorious for strange happenings. Sometimes just the thought of trekking through a swamp at night is enough to shake the fortitude of even the stoutest heart. Swamps seem to have all the ingredients for horror. They sometimes have a misty fog that hangs near the ground, they have strange noises, many strange noises, they are very damp and humid and they are very messy. If someone wanted to write a horror story and didn't know where to begin his tale, he couldn't go wrong starting it at a swamp. We think of swamps as being the home to many foul smelling things, and sometimes that is right. Swamps often contain brackish water and this certainly doesn't smell like cologne.

It is said that, for some reason, radio transmission in the swamp can not be counted on. While it works sometimes, other times transmissions get garbled. Cell phones may also cut out and not work. An example of a swamp that has these problems is Okefenokee. I am sure almost everyone here has heard of this famous swamp. It is located in the southeast corner of Georgia in the U.S. and is the largest swamp in North America. It is a favorite destination for camping and canoeing. I bet you need a lot of bug spray going into that place.

There have been many reports of strange glowing lights in some of our swamps. These lights are said to drift along following people and scaring the heck out of them. An investigation has shown that much of it can be attributed to foxfire. Foxfire is swamp gas that somehow gets ignited and floats through the air. Even people that know what this is state that it still is very scary to see. What makes this event so scary is the fact that it seems to have a mind of it's own guiding the way it drifts. Another term for foxfire is wetland flatulence.

These things we have discussed are all natural events but there are, what some claim to be, unnatural events occurring in the swamps. Some claim to have seen things that are best left to the imagination, but will be discussed here. Well the northern woods have their Big Foot and the Himalayas have their Yeti and Okefenokee has it's Pig Man. No I am not kidding, there has been many reported sightings of a huge hairy ape or human with the nose of a pig, hence Pig Man. These same people state that a pungent odor comes from this, what ever it is. No one has been reported as being attacked by it. I think I can solve this mystery, obviously they bumped into my mother-in-law. Please someone, just tell my wife that I am just kidding. Well anyway, is there some unknown creature wandering the swamp, could something be in there that is from prehistoric times? I think that could be possible since this swamp is mostly inaccessible to people.

Not all swamps are in places with a warm, year around, climate. Massachusetts has it own creepy swamp and it's name is Hockomock. Hey with a name like that, it has to be creepy. The only thing missing here is someone saying that it contains an old indian burial ground. This area has been reported many times for it's strange goings on. Even the name is creepy when translated, it means place where spirits dwell. That is spirits as in ghosts. But when the English settled the area, they gave it a name that they felt was more befitting. The beautiful name that they gave it was Devil's Swamp. Wow, that makes me feel better already. Ancient artifacts dating back over 9,000 years have been found in the swamp. Sometimes certain types of swamps are great preservers of artifacts along with bogs. The indians contended that the swamp was home to both good and bad spirits. This swamp also was reported to have some sort of ape man in it. The creature was said to have a skunk like smell. This sort of bolsters the case in Okefenokee.

There have also been many strange reports of ufos coming from or hovering over the swamp. I guess this would be a good way of keeping prying eyes out. After all, who is going to run into a swamp to check this out? I know that I'm not. There have been reports of strange creatures and monsters living in swamps all over the world. While there may be some, I am just not disputing this but not agreeing, the surroundings of a swamp alone are enough to conjure up visions of all sorts of things. Imagine having to spend the night in one of these places.

No swamp story would be complete without mentioning the Booger or Boogie man. It is said he dwells in the swamps of the world and is also hairy and smells bad. It looks like smelling bad is a requirement to live in the swamp. The Booger man is said to be similar to the Pig Man and Skunk Ape. It is easy to know if these creatures are sneaking up on you because you can smell them a long distance away. If they exist they must not get many dates.

Maybe the indians had it right, maybe the souls of the departed are to be found in a swamp. If not, maybe they should be.
