One of the strange things in life, along with many others of course, is the fact that sometimes an odor can permeate an area and yet no one can figure out where it is coming from or even what it is. This is not such an isolated incident as one might think and it can happen in a very large area. A good example of this, is what happened in Manhattan in the month of October, 2005. It was almost a joke. Manhattan is not know as a sweet smelling city. As you walk around the city your nose is assaulted by many different smells from many different culutures and sources, very few of which would make you remark, "I enjoyed that." But things were different with this odor. Many people remarked that it smelled like maple syrup. The Mysterious smell had covered over 10 miles and no trace of it's source could be found. Was it caused by some experiment conducted by the military, perhaps to test how fast a biological agent would spread if let go in the atmosphere? No one knew, all they knew was that they had no idea where the smell came from or what it was. Even air tests were conducted but there was nothing in the air capable of harming anyone except for the usual New York traffic fumes. This particular mystery was not solved. Ohio is another area that was home to a unknown odor. It seems that an odor was hanging around several neighborhoods and no one could figure out where it was coming from. Even the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) was called in to investigate. This smell is not so sweet however. People who have smelled it describe the smell as putrid. This is not something you want to find out for yourself. Can you imagine trying to sit down to a meal and this smell come floating in? Yuck! The odor is said to be having an effect on some people. They are becoming ill when they smell it. No wonder. Some have even complained of getting a sore throat from continuously breathing in the odor. Areas of Washington D.C. were subjected to a sickening smell last month. It seemed to have struck in Northeast Washington and made many people sick. This smell seemed to have found it's way into people's homes and office buildings. It smelled like something rotting. The smell was so bad that people complained of being woken up by it. It was pure stench. Some said that it was so strong that it gave them a headache. The smell struck many places including schools, police stations and businesses not to mention the many homes that it invaded. At first people thought that it might be a gas leak, but this was proven wrong. Eventually, while searching for an answer to the problem, the local fire department suggested that the smell might have been caused by a clogged sewer pipe or storm drain, but many people were not buying this unconvincing explanation. Even the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission refuted the sewer pipe explanation. There are always those people that connect anything that is out of the ordinary with ufos, aliens or the paranormal. I think that we can eliminate them in these cases however, unless the aliens come from a stinky planet and were home sick. One school district didn't as you will see. I was reading an article the other day that shows how fumes dumped into the atmosphere in the midwest can manifest themselves on the east coast. I wonder if it is possible that maybe some factory in a place like Illinois or Ohio let some odor get into the air there and it floated across the country? The only thing that would shoot down this explanation. is the fact that no one in between these two places reported the same odor. I would think others would have to smell it as it floated across country. A smell that permeated one school could not be traced. The school district became so concerned that they called in a paranormal investigator who quickly came to the conclusion that a ghost was causing the smell. The smell was a tobacco smell (tobacco smell in a school, how surprising). He claims that it is from tobacco that hasn't been used for over two hundred years. He said it is being caused by someone who drowned in the area a long time ago. He says that the school can get rid of the odor if it hires a team of ghost busters. I wonder if Bill Murray is booked up? The name of the school has been deleted to protect the children from such foolishness. So you see, as I said in the beginning of this article, mysterious odors are not so rare as one might think. Many office buildings suffer from them and they have sometimes even been linked to serious diseases like Legionnaire's disease. They seem to occur all across this country of ours and no doubt the world. |
