Our life contains mysteries, many mysteries. Some of them have been handed down to us by our ancestors and although we suspect that others come from the same place, we can't be sure of it. Some of these mysteries are in the form of structures such as the Sphinx but others are in the form of wittings. Now here is a question for you, why would someone write an entire book using a code or unknown language that he knew future generations would never understand? To complicate this issue, why would someone spend years on this project? Was it meant for some unknown people who's existence we are still not aware of? Could this book, or manuscript, have been meant for alien eyes? All these questions and more are prompted by the discovery of the Voynich Manuscript.
Drawing from Voynich Manuscript It is said that this manuscript is the most mysterious document ever discovered. The size is about 7 inches by 10 inches and it contains about 200 pages, some of which contain illustrations. It is all hand written. Looking at it, it sort of reminds you of those hand written books that the medieval monks used to make, they were usually bibles and had beautiful writing and illustrations. They also took years to complete. The Voynich manuscript is a little different, most of the illustrations seem to be there as an illustration for the text on the page, rather than illuminating the work as the old bibles did. Another big difference between the medieval bibles and the Voynich Manuscript is the fact that no one has ever been able to figure out what it says. Yeah that's right, in this day of high powered computers capable of breaking almost any code, the same machines that figured out how to create safeguards for our nuclear weapons, and they still can't figure out this text. So where did this mysterious manuscript come from? In 1912 a book collector named Wilfred M. Voynich found this manuscript in a chest. The chest was located at Villa Mondragone in France. This is a Jesuit college. It was later sold to a rare book dealer in New York for around $24,500. He in turn donated it eight years later in 1969 to Yale University. It can be found under catalog number MS 408. The manuscript wasn't found alone however, there was a letter dated 1666 inside of it. It seems that Emperor Rudolph II had bought the manuscript and a man named Marcus Marci was asking someone named Athanasius Kircher to try and decipher the work. In the letter the name of Roger Bacon came up as the possible author. Bacon was a Franciscan Friar and was famous for being an early advocate of the scientific method. He lived from 1214 to 1294. But why would Bacon write something that no one could read? Script from Voynich Manuscript Many people believe that this is not a work of Bacon's even though Yale credits him with it. None other than the famous Leonardo da Vinci tried his hand at deciphering the Voynich Manuscript. He had stated that he was only able to figure out a few words. Apparently this was a few more than anyone else could. But there is an illustration in the book that seems to show the birth of someone hundreds of years in the future. Many say it was Leonardo himself and even Leonardo's grandfather seemed to confirm this. Is this manuscript a prediction of the future, some of that future or even all of it having passed already? Usually deciphering ordinary language is not too hard for code breakers if no attempt is made to encode it. Certain words, letter or symbols will repeat themselves and therefore become known. If you have a non Roman language such as Egyptian hieroglyphics, that has no reference points then this is not possible. That is why the *Rosetta Stone was such a find. So here is the question that we have been working up to, was this work meant to be read by only one other person, a secret society, space aliens or no one? Another question is why can't we decipher it? Might the code have been based on some sort of mathematics based on another book? If this is the case and some long lost book is the basis for this code, we may never find out what it says. Could this manuscript be some elaborate hoax? I guess there is always this possibility. It could even be an ancient hoax, written by someone for some purpose buried in the sands of time. Will we ever find out what this says, if indeed, it does say anything? Maybe not, but we can always hope. By the way, I forgot to mention the fact that the manuscript pictures unknown constellations of stars that make the whole thing that much more mysterious. *This stone contained the meaning of many Egyptian symbols and converted them into ancient Greek, a better understood language. |
