Strange, Very Strange

This world of ours is just a crazy place. Things sometimes happen that seem just nuts, objects are in places that make no sense and people crusade for causes that sometimes seem bizarre. As you get older, you begin to realize that the planet is not the tidy place that you once thought that it was. I guess what I am saying could fit any number of situations. It could fit politics, which has been going steadily down hill lately, it could fit our relations with others, especially when someone does something to us that we never expected and it could fit almost anything else that we care to discuss.

Looking at something that makes no sense always makes me wonder what is going on. For example why is there a phone booth in the middle of the Mojave desert? It is situated in one of the most lonely parts of the Mojave National Preserve. This lonely booth is miles away from any structure or highway. This is not exactly a money maker for the phone company. It does make you think, doesn't it? Remember that phone booth in the old tv comedy Get Smart? You got in it and dialed the phone and the booth became an elevator down to an entire underground complex. I am not saying that this is what happens with this telephone booth, it does sound absurd, but why is that booth there, is there some sort of ulterior motive for it being there? Maybe it is some sort of strategic marker that is sighted from the air. Could it be that the phone is really some sort of signal generator and a special signal is being sent from the unit for purposes unknown, or could it just be that the local phone company told an installer to put a phone in the park and he was disgruntled and put it in the worst possible location to get even with the powers that be?

Not everyone likes the name of the place they live in. Sometimes it is a little long and is a nuisance when you have to fill out forms. But why in the world would ANYONE name their village Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch? I guess you would have to ask that question of the the people that live on the island of Anglesey in Wales, in that village. Could it be that they wanted to keep people out who were bad spellers? All those letters and they still didn't use the entire alphabet. Maybe there is some message hidden in the name of the town that had some nefarious use? This town has 58 letters in it's name and it has the longest name of anyplace in the United Kingdom.

You never know what you might find for sale on the internet, but maybe you don't want to know. A little something for the lady that has everything is the decorated roach. Yes you heard me correctly. People are actually selling giant Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches that you wear as a brooch. It seems the roach comes with a leash that you pin to blouse or jacket. He, and I say he, because all the roaches are male to insure sterility as the ad says. The ad also states that the roach is highly decorated with Swarovski crystal and the leash keeps him from running amok. I just can't see how anyone could resist having a live roach walking all over them while they dine out. Seriously folks, you have to admit, this seems strange, very strange indeed. Why would anyone get into this field? Can sales be that good?

Hey we use DNA evidence in our police work and now the Chinese are using odors in theirs. It seems that the Chinese police department in Nanjing has found that if you store smells at -18 degrees Celsius, they will last at least three years. They claim that they have already convicted 23 people using this technique. I think that this is a great idea. Just imagine taking the smells from some of the bums in the bowery section in New York City and storing their smells for future use. That would be a great punishment for a cop that was in disfavor. Hey Joe, I am sending you to the smells unit, you will remain there until you are released from that duty. I want to know how this works. Do they have someone smell a suspect then go to the frozen odors and defrost them one at a time so that they can try and match the smell? Ugh what a job that would be.

Sometimes it seems that things happen for a purpose. I read a story about a man who was in a bank when robbers came in. To make their point, they shot him in the stomach. You would think that this was a bad thing wouldn't you? Well it turned out to be a bad thing that saved his life. When doctors were removing the bullet, they found he had a very serious tumor that surely would have killed him had they not gotten it out.

Whittier Alaska is one of the strangest towns in the U.S. What are the things that make it so strange? The U.S. built two buildings in Whittier for housing that were capable of supporting over 30,000 people. Over 90% of everyone living in Whittier lives in one building. Because of cutbacks and base reductions only 300 people live in one of the buildings and it is believed that the other is empty. When this city was built, it had no access by road for over 50 years.

I thought that a fitting way to finish this article would be with a few records from the Guiness Book of Records so here they are:

In 2004, Derek Boyer from Australia pulled a truck trailer weighing 30.58 tons a distance of 30.5 meters.
In 1959, Robert Foster of America held his breath for 13 minutes, 42.5 seconds.
In 1990, Gary Stewart of America did 177,737 consecutive pogo stick jumps.
In 1992, Paul Lynch of Britain did 124 one finger push ups.
Between 1969 and 2000, Arthur Blessitt of America walked 34,501 miles on seven continents carrying a 3.7 meter cross.
Charles Osborne from America had the hiccups from 1922 to 1990.
Roy C. Sullivan of American survived being struck by lightning seven times.
