There are many people walking around this planet of ours, that are completely blind. This is not a surprise to any of us. What may be a surprise is the fact that doctors cannot find anything physically wrong with them. How can this be? Almost all of our lives we have been told by doctors that if they couldn’t find anything wrong with us and we had symptoms of an illness then we were psychosomatic. In other words, our minds are giving us the symptoms or the illness. Because of this answer by some doctors, people have died. It is called misdiagnosis and it happens all to frequently, There are a number of Cambodian woman that have immigrated to the U.S. These are women who are special in a certain way. They have witnessed many killings and even tortures under the Pol Pot regime, in their country. This government was infamous for its cruelty. They even went as far as to design a tool for pulling the livers out of children. The reason for this was that it took a couple of days to die this way. They gave the word sadistic a new meaning. What really makes these women different is the fact that they are all blind and not one doctor in this country can find a physical cause. It is almost obvious that their brains have shut off their optical nerves to avoid seeing any more heinous acts. Can you imagine what they must have witnessed? Many of these women were denied any help because when they were diagnosed, it was said that there was nothing wrong with them. I guess the government doctors thought that they were faking since they had no physical symptoms. Sometimes remorse can bring on blindness. There was the case of the teacher in high school that was teaching boxing. He got angry at a young man he was teaching because the boy kept hitting him at inappropriate times. Finally he hit the boy and sent him to the hospital. It turned out that the boy was a problem child but the teacher felt so bad at what he had done that he felt overwhelmed by his sorrow. When he woke up the next day, his vision was about half as good as normal. In a few days it had deteorated so much that he was blind. He went to Johns Hopkins Hospital which is one of the best in the world and yet the doctors there could find nothing wrong with him. Unfortunately for the teacher he has never been approved for workmen’s comp. It seems that hysterical blindness is a double whammy. First, no physical cause can be found and second, it is very hard to get any financial help since the government doctors can never find a physical cause and this seems to make them think that you are a fake. There are those in the medical profession that believe that hysterical blindness doesn’t exist. There are others that treat it with a placebo or with group or single discussion groups. As I said in the beginning of this article, you could be diagnosed with hysterical blindness and still have an undetected physical disorder. Sometimes the gifted are misdiagnosed as people with mental illness. The reason for this is that they don’t fit into the norm and they think a little different than the rest of us. Among those who know, it is said that the world is deprived of many gifted people because they are thought to be ill, mentally ill. Can you imagine an Einstein being forced to take medicine for a condition that does not exist? This in turn, hinders his thought process. If the diagnosis was made early in his or her life, then it is quite possible that he or she was deprived of the education that was needed for these people to really blossom. This is such a sad thought. There are many other types of illnesses besides blindness that are blamed on the mind. You have your tics, trembles and just about any other physical deficiency including rashes and other unsavory things that can be blamed on the mind. If one were to believe what they read on the internet, then they would have to conclude that there are many cures for hysterical blindness and these are in the form of homoeopathic remedies. It is a shame that this is probably not true. Here is an interesting historical note. It was said that Hitler had hysterical blindness after World War I, even though it was said his temporary blindness was from mustard gas. He was treated by the controversial psychiatrist Edmund Forster. This psychiatrist was famous for telling his patients that they could only be cured by the strength of their will. Some contribute this to the change in Hitler. First he cured his own blindness and then he decided to take over Germany. Photo Source: Clipart.com |
