Through history there are stories about people that were just very hard to kill. Some people seem to be much tougher in this area. One of my favorite stories is how the Russians tried to kill Grigori Rasputin, also known as the mad monk. Rasputin was a very strange and some say evil person. He believed in drunken orgies as a way of having something to be sorry for and it was said that he even raped a nun. He made it to the court of Tsar Nicholas II and became very influential with the Tsar, Tsar’s wife and their son, which angered many people in the court. While quite a few thought him mad, there were those that believed that he was a healer and a psychic. A prostitute shoved a knife into the stomach of Rasputin and his entrails hung out and she left, convinced that she had killed him, but he lived. The story goes that a group of nobles lured Rasputin to Moika Palace. He was brought to the basement and given cakes and wine. Massive amounts of cyanide was in the food. The poison had no effect. When this didn’t work he was shot in the back. He fell to the floor. The shooter left, but then he remembered he had left his coat and went back for it. When he got back to the area where the shooting took place, Rasputin opened his eyes and lunged for him. He was now strangling him when the other came in and saw what was happening and they began to fire at Rasputin and he fell again. He was still alive and trying to get up. They then clubbed him and castrated him. They wrapped his body in a carpet and threw it into the freezing Neva River. Rasputin managed to break out of the carpet and his bonds, but drowned. His arms were found in the upright position as if he was trying to claw his way out from under the ice. Blackbeard was one of the most famous pirates that ever lived and also a man that was very hard to kill. He was said to be a giant of a man. In his last fight he suffered over twenty stab wounds including one where a sword blade broke off in his back. Along with those wounds he had been shot about five times. During that fight, his last one, he finally bled to death while trying to reload his pistols and then had his head cut off. Failed Bombing Of Hitler Hitler was extremely hard to kill, so hard that every attempt to do so met with failure. Maybe it wasn’t so much the fact that his body was extremely tough, but more the fact that he was extremely lucky. Almost everyone knows about the bomb that was placed under a conference room table at the Wolf’s Lair. The bomb went off, but the table was so sturdy that it protected Hitler from being killed, but there were many other plots that also never succeeded. Some say that Hitler was one of the luckiest men alive, at least up until the end of the war. One army officer named Beck had agreed with Hitler that he should start a war of aggression, but he disagreed on when it should start. He felt that the very earliest should be 1940 and that anytime before that would lead to the destruction of Germany, because he felt that they were not fully prepared. So many attempts were made on Hitler’s life, it is almost impossible to count them all. He was fired upon during a rally in 1921. In 1923 the car he was in was fired upon. In 1932 shots were fired at the train he was riding in. In 1933 a man was caught trying to plant a bomb to kill Hitler. Another bomb attempt was foiled in 1936. In 1937 a mentally ill man was arrested, he had traveled to Berlin to kill Hitler. In 1938 a Soviet spy managed to get close to Hitler in a restaurant, but was not successful. Also in 1938 F.W. Heinz was to have Hitler killed during the Sudetenland crisis, but the crisis was resolved. Maurice Bavaund, in 1938, tried several times to shoot Hitler and was finally arrested. In 1939 the British military attache presented plans in London to kill Hitler, but they were rejected. Also in 1939 a bomb was planted in the Burgerbaukeller and set to go off at 21:20. Hitler left at 21:07. Von Ribbentrop’s personal secretary was caught planning to kill Hitler. General Franz Halder went to see Hitler several times in 1939 and carried a loaded gun which he planned to use to kill Hitler, but couldn’t do it. Hitler, by changing his plans avoided at least several attempts on his life. One was an attempt in 1940 at the victory parade in Paris. Another was in 1943, when he was supposed to visit the troops near Pottawa. Then there was another one in 1943 when Hitler was to be shot during his visit to Smolensk. In 1943 a bomb had been placed upon Hitler’s aircraft and was supposed to explode automatically when the plane reached a certain altitude. The bomb failed to explode. It had been disguised as a wine bottle. There had been at least 8 other attempts before the war ended. The last one was by Albert Speer who planned to kill Hitler using gas, but that was never carried out. Hitler surely had uncanny luck. Some say it was the luck of the devil. Jim Bowie Jim Bowie is famous for being at the Alamo, but he had been famous before that for his prowess with a knife. In Louisiana a duel was to take place and Bowie decided to watch it. The duel became a mob fight and Bowie was beaten, stabbed and then shot. He killed the sheriff with his large Bowie knife and the fight became famous as the Sandbar Fight and rocketed him to fame. Along with the sheriff Bowie killed another two men with his knife. Bowie went to Texas where three men were hired to assassinate him. Somehow Bowie managed to kill all three of them with only his knife. |
