Did you ever have a problem composing a letter or document and have to make numerous corrections to the text along the way until you finally got it right? Well don't feel bad because you are not alone. Thomas Jefferson had the same problem when he was trying to write the Declaration of Independence. The Library of Congress has some of those pages on exhibit and I am showing them here. You may click on these pages to get a full page view.
I thought that this insight into the workings of Jefferson's mind was fascinating, I hope that you felt the same way. When Lincoln was going to give his Gettysburg address, did you ever wonder what it was like out there? I did and I found some pictures at the Library of Congress by Matthew Brady This picture shows the crowd waiting for Lincoln to arrive Here Lincoln is in the center of the picture and is being mobbed by the crowd. I don't know if this was before or after the address.
When Lincoln was nominated for president he drew up this acceptance speech. Source: Library of Congress Lincoln didn't think he would be elected to a second term and wrote this letter to his cabinet. Source: Library of Congress Little did Lincoln know at the time that he would be reelected and murdered while watching the play My American Cousin at the Ford Theatre. Amazingly for a man that didn't think he would be reelected, Lincoln became one of the most famous of all the presidents and one of the most beloved. |
