The World Of Disinformation

Disinformation, we are probably all familiar with this term, but just in case you are not, I will try and explain to you what it is. Disinformation is a term that is generally used to describe the act of putting out information that is erroneous for some benefit. This act can be accomplished by individuals working for themselves or by companies and governments. When I was younger we used to call this lying, but we seem to have gotten a lot more sophisticated since then .Sometimes there is a legitimate reason to do this. An example of this might be during a war, when we want the enemy to think one thing while you go into another. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. The opposite of this might be when a company puts out false financial statements to make the government think that they owe less taxes. This is not only wrong, but is against the law. There is also that area that some governments work in, where they try and justify different things that they do. Let's look at the Iraq war for example. The government claims that it got erroneous information about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction. Some people claim that they knew all along that these weapons didn't exist. If these people are correct, then the entire business that was put out about weapons of mass destruction was disinformation.

Disinformation is really nothing new. It has probably been used since the beginning of time. One caveman might've told another caveman that he was going to hunt in one area, to hide the fact that he was going to a different place which had more animals. We can't be sure of this, but it is human nature to try and keep the best for one's self. Over the years there have been some really wild claims about how disinformation is being used. One of the wildest ones that I have heard, is that the alien abductions that are taking place with some people who are not being returned. Disinformation is being used to cover up the fact that all these people have been sent to a prison in another dimension. Excuse me if I don't buy this one. There is also the income tax disinformation, as I like to call. What we are told is that cutting the taxes of the rich helps all of us and that is why most of the rich pay half or much less in taxes than the middle class. If you believe this I have a bridge I would like to sell you. Throughout history, it was very hard to detect disinformation, but this has really changed in the last few years. Global communications on a scale here to fore unknown throughout history, has been put into place. Anybody with a computer can read people's opinions on any subject, including any statements that are made by people companies or governments. This makes the act of disinformation more difficult to perform.

The main problem with detecting disinformation that is aimed against the public, is that most people want to trust their government. One of the worst things they can find out, is that the government is lying to them. This is true especially when the lie involves the lives of people's sons and daughters and companies lining their pockets with huge profits, while our people are being killed. When that disinformation is found out, then new disinformation is put in its place. An example of this is Iraq, where we were told there were weapons of mass destruction. While everybody knows now that this was not true, so now we are being told that Saddam Hussein was just like Hitler. The problem with that statement was that Hitler declared war on us and was moving to take over the entire world. Nobody is saying that Saddam Hussein was not a bloodthirsty ruler, but I am saying that we had no business going into that country. I think if it wasn't for the fact that Saddam Hussein, former ally of the United States invaded Kuwait, we might never have gone into Iraq. Kuwait has oil.

When Ronald Reagan was president, he was accused by the Washington Post of launching a secret plan of deception. Today we would call this deception, disinformation. He was trying to make a case to attack Libya and their leader Moammar Gadhafi. So you can see that using disinformation to give us a reason to attack other countries is certainly nothing new. One has only to look at the lies we tell about the Gulf of Tonkin, that brought us into the Vietnam war. We really told a whopper that time. The American public was told that North Vietnam attacked two of our destroyers. One being the USS Maddox and the other the USS Turner Joy. Supposedly the attacks took place in 1964 on the second of August and on the fourth of August, both in the Gulf of Tonkin. It is believed today, by most people , that neither of these attacks ever took place. A study by the national security agency doesn't admit that the first attack didn't take place, but states that the second one probably did not. Even this much of an admission shows us the evil use of disinformation by a country against its citizens. 58,000 plus Americans were killed in Vietnam and about 304,000 were wounded, for a lie and to make money for the industrial military complex. When you hear about things like, this you have to realize that Americans everywhere are in jeopardy.

We tend to think that our enemies are other countries and yet we seem to lose more people because of lies that we are told in this country. These lies often lead us into conflicts where many of us get killed and wounded. I think that it is time that we can no longer accept things that we are told, even by the government, as being the absolute truth. It is a shame when we have to question what we are being told by our own government, but there you have it. It is a matter of survival and maybe even preventing a world conflict. As I said before, during wartime it is perfectly legitimate to put out lies to confuse the enemy. During the D-Day invasions we had sent out signals that we were going to land on beaches in many different places, none of which were the ones we actually landed on. There was certainly nothing wrong with this and as a matter of fact, it probably saved many lives. The difference here is that the disinformation was aimed at the enemy. Today much disinformation is aimed at the American public. I am almost willing to bet that if we looked at all the incidences of disinformation that has been put out in the last 10 years, by the government, you would see that most of it was aimed at us. Doesn't this indicate to anybody that there is something morally wrong here?

Maybe the time has come when there should be a position in the Cabinet for a true ethical advisor. I am sure that he would not be too popular to the powers that be, if he did his job correctly. The first thing we should do, is not have so many secret meetings. Sure the government must keep some things secret, we all know that, but keeping things secret that are not strategic, just so that the public doesn't find out about them is wrong. If you are ashamed of what you are doing, then what you are doing is probably wrong on some level, whether it be morally wrong or legally wrong. If it is legally wrong, then you should go to jail. If it is morally wrong then you should be ashamed of yourself. The time for honesty is long overdue.
