Disinformation

Most of us have heard the word Disinformation But what exactly are we talking about? Disinformation is usually put out by the government but can be used by anyone. It is a planned program used to fool people or discredit others when the government doesn't want us to know the truth, it is also used to fool the enemy into doing something that you want him to do. If we were looking for an example of this, the people that believe in ufos would say that a perfect example was Roswell, when we were told that a weather balloon crashed and not a ufo. Years later the government told us that they were trying to hide the existence of a secret project named Mogul. So we know for sure that disinformation was used, maybe not to hide a ufo crash, but it was definitely used. Why is it that so many movies are made showing the CIA deceiving people, the FBI with secrets that very few people know and the president not even knowing everything that is going on? Could it be that is because much of this is true? During the cold war we built up our disinformation resources to an unprecedented level, so did the Soviets. We wanted them to think that we were more powerful in some areas than we were and they wanted us to think the same thing. There are even some people out there that think that our flight to the moon was all disinformation on a grand scale. That is the problem with disinformation, once you are caught using it, it is hard to believe anything you say after that. The Soviets tried to deceive us into thinking that they could bankroll their huge military forever, keeping up with every advance we made. Indeed, in some areas that were at least equal to us if not ahead, but their economy burst, their picture of unlimited funds was just a sham. Usually your enemy knows things about you that disinformation can't hide, so why is it used in these cases? It is used to keep the public from knowing what is going on because they might object if they knew the true story. Look at Iraq, if the public knew that there were no weapons of mass destruction there, don't you think they would have objected to sending their sons and husbands on an invasion that is resulting in deaths every day and keeping the military on ever extending tours of duty? Can we really believe that the government didn't know what was going on in that country or were they following an agenda? When Hitler invaded the Saar he stated that he was only taking back German lands needed for coal and the repatriation of German citizens. He just wanted to see if the world would believe this bunk and they did rather than fight, until the Polish invasion. Another example of disinformation occurred in 1952, when the Soviet Union accused the U.S. of using biological warfare in Korea when they knew this wasn't true. Sometimes forged papers were produced to prove their point. Different events from World War II, among other wars, have been changed to enhance history for some purpose. The winners of the wars usually write the history. Disinformation is nothing new. The ancient Greeks used it. They constructed prophecies to lead the population in the direction they wanted. Notice the disinformation was aimed at their own people in this case, sound familiar? The Greeks also fooled Xerxes the king of the Persians. They won the battle of Salamis in 480 BC because they were able to convince the Persians that they would let them win and that some units were running away, when none of this was true. The rational was that the Persians would be allowed to win because the different Greek states were so mad at each other that this was a way to get even. Of course none of this was true and a headstrong Xerxes was defeated. One great way to get your disinformation out is on the super highway, the Internet. Almost anyone has the chance to influence others using this means. A really good story will spread like wildfire. You can make up almost anything and then just mention it in conjunction with a famous name and away it goes. The Internet has brought disinformation to a whole higher plane. So how do we know what is actually true historically? The sad truth is that we really don't know. Just take a look at the story of Texas for example. There have been so many different stories about the status of Texas and why the war with Mexico started that it is hard to sort out the truth. No insult is intended here to Texans, the same is true for our own revolution. Did you know that the English were paying ten times the taxes that they asked the colonies to pay when they became cash strapped and we revolted? This is not generally taught in history classes. I am not saying we didn't deserve to be independent, I am just stating a fact. Even disinformation has disinformation used against it. For example, if you try and look up the disinformation campaign on the Internet, what do you find? You find an awful lot about ufos and aliens. Right away this make you feel like a crack pot if you try and use any of this material. Is this just a coincidence? After all, disinformation is a legiminate subject, we all know that it exists in various forms. When the Pentagon was hit by a plane on 9/11, the plane disintegrated. Emails began to flow stating that a plane never hit it. The emails became a deluge. It is said that this was a government agency trying to hide the fact by claiming that there was no plane. What was to be gained from this? I really don't know, maybe they just didn't want the American public to realize that it was so easy to get to any government building, but it didn't work. When disinformation comes from the government, it is called poisoning the well. One of the greatest disinformation coups in history occurred in World War II. The British had the frozen body of a Major Martin and thawed him out and planted a letter on him about the location of the invasion that was completely false. They delivered the body by submarine to an off shore position near Spain, put a life jacket on the body and sent it floating toward shore. The body was discovered by a fishing boat and the Germans fell for the rouse. The truth is.......I don't know the truth and neither do you. We have to question everything we hear and decide if there is anything to be gained by someone putting out a certain story. It's a tough way to live, but a necessary one, after all, remember this, there are many things that you are not supposed to know! |
