Facts About This Website

Since its summer again things are a little slower around the website. Oh I still get about 500,000 hits a month or thereabouts, but no more than that. I pick up in September. I believe that a lot of visitors are doing so from schools. This gives me a little time to experiment. I have just got done downloading and learning how to use a new PDF suite. In case you don't know what I am talking about, .pdf files are called Portable Document Format files and they are the type that Adobe Acrobat reads. They can be exported to different types of operating systems and the files and photos in them read by all. They are handy because you can make one big file and use the PDF reader to read it and have the pages listed on the left so that you can jump to them. There are different types of PDF software out there that do different things. The type I am using will create a PDF file buy using a printer driver. It doesn't actually print them on paper but creates them.

What I am planning on doing is creating files of some of the more interesting stuff. For example you can combine different government memos into one file and see the progression of a certain topic. I have used PDF files in the past but those were already created. When I start to create some I would appreciate all feedback. I have other plans for the website, but being only one person it is hard to implement them, I had planned to do more interviews then tragedy struck our family and that went by the wayside. I upgraded my recording capability for better quality and ease of use, but haven't had a chance to give it a try yet. There are a lot of interesting people out there to interview and one person in particular wants me to interview him on the pyramids. He is a member of the Great Pyramid Society so that should be interesting.

There are also things that I wanted to catch up on to see what is new. I had planned to check up on that black box that was first located in Edinburgh Scotland. That is the box that only puts out 0s and 1s and yet before a world crisis it defies the law of averages and puts out far more of one number and this has been puzzling scientists for years now. It would also be interesting to see if this happened before any of the latest disasters. The boxes are now located in different places all over the world and have been working overtime.

It seems that some people are a little skittish about joining the discussion group since it moved to Facebook. I personally have no problem making comments, or answering them within the group and joining Facebook is no big deal. The only recommendation that I can make is when you fill out your profile, don't put in anything that you don't want seen and everything should be fine. One by-product of being in the About Facts Net Group on Facebook is that I no longer get all that pornography and spam that was such a pain to delete. To those that decided that the group on Facebook was not for them, let me say that you are missing out on a chance to get into an enjoyable discussion.

I think that I pretty much have gotten the design of the site where I want it, after all these years. There are regrets and I am sure that other people that have designed sites have them too. I wish that in the beginning I would have designed the comment box different at the end of the articles. Over the years I have changed bulletin board several times, but because of the way the comment box was designed, it would be far too much work to put the new link on each of the old pages. This was solved at the beginning of this year. I made the comment link point to the same page where I could just change the link if I had to and this would update all the pages for the year. Sometimes you just don't think straight when you are doing things and I wasn't thinking straight about this for about 7 years.

Last year the site got about 7,000,000 hits. Google probably gets this in an hour, but for my small site it was quite a lot. I am hoping to do better this year, but time will tell. Sometimes doing too good can hurt you financially. I had to increase the bandwidth on the site because some days there was just so many people on the site that no one else could get on and my quota was used up. Increasing bandwidth costs money and the annual fee I have to pay to be online went up substantially. Remember that I don't permit advertising, so I have to bear the cost myself. It is worth it however, if people enjoy reading some of the articles.

What has surprised me from time to time are some of the facts I have found out when researching an article. One of the things that really bothers me is that I have found that most of the rich and powerful just do not care how they make their money. They don't even care it it hurts or kills the ordinary people. There are just too many examples of this that I have found. Other things that have bothered me are how some of the contractors are selected to do work for the government. You would think that it would be the ones who could make the best for the least, but it just doesn't work that way a lot of times. These companies seem to get the job based on who had worked for them before going into government service, how much money is spread around by lobbyists and so forth.

As I mentioned a few days ago I have added a new topic and that is NASA news. There is a lot going on with that agency and it is worth talking about. Most people seem to be interested in the NASA goings on.

The site first opened in June 2003. Below are views over the years of the changes to the home page. Yep nothing stays the same.
