Before I start, I want to let you all know that I have not tried many of the things listed here, they come from all different sources and I can make no guarantee that they work, but many say that they do. Did you ever wonder if there were other uses for the things that we use everyday? It just so happens that there are thousands and maybe hundreds of thousands of different uses for ordinary things. Let's take a glass of beer for example. We think of beer as a mildly alcoholic beverage that is used as a drink. While that is true, it does have tons of other uses that we mostly never hear about. If you have a home and have a lot of slugs and snails, putting beer on them will send them to their eternal rest. If you have a stomach ache, supposedly beer will help not only with the queasy feeling, but also with the pain. It is not to be used if you have a ulcer or gastritis. It is said that if you allow beer to go flat and take a damp cloth and dip it into the beer, you can use this to polish wooden furniture and it will give it a nice gloss. If you want to have soft skin, you can add beer to your bath. Beer also happens to be great to cook with. One of the best goulashes I ever had was made with beer. Toothpaste Toothpaste has a lot of different uses besides cleaning teeth. It can be used to clean shoes and even ones with tough stains. Those shoes will need a little more scrubbing, so if you take a tooth brush and gently rub the toothpaste over the spot, there is a good chance you will get rid of it. Have you ever prepared food and were left with the smell of vegetables on your hands? There is nothing worse than your hands smelling like garlic or onions. If you wash your hands with toothpaste they will smell fresh. For you women out there, you can try a new nail color without actually having to paint it on your nails and then remove it. Just take a piece of transparent tape, put it over one nail and put the polish on that. When you are done, peel it off. Some people swear that if you have a case of the runs, the best thing for it is to drink 1 glass of room temperature, flat, Coke, every couple of hours until it stops. Many swear by this. It has also been said that sometimes when a floor is slippery and a movie company wants to shoot a dance scene, they will coat the floor with coke and let it dry to make it sticky. A tip was given on TV that stated that if you have burnt pans, you can get them clean by boiling Coke in them. If you get gum in your hair soak it Coke for a few minutes and then the gum will come right out. It seems that almost everything has more than one use. Take sugar for example, it has many different uses. If you want to make cut flowers last longer just put one tablespoon of sugar into the flower water for every liter. Have you ever burned your tongue? I bet you have. If you sprinkle the area with sugar, the pain should lessen. If you take a handful of sugar and throw it on a pile of wood or coal, it will be easier to light. To keep a homemade cake fresher longer, sprinkle sugar on it. One thing that has been around for a long time is glass. I think that it is interesting that new uses are being found for glass. In the old days glass was not only used for windows, but ground glass was one of the favorite ways to assassinate someone in Italy during the time of the famous poisoners. It would be put into their food. It is becoming a hot commodity, because science has found out how to create glass fibers thinner than a human hair. Today glass is being made even out of metals. If you ask a scientist what glass is, they will say "Glass is a state of matter rather than a particular compound," The heat resistant tiles on the space shuttle are glass, as are fiber optics. A new type of glass bead is being developed for injection into tumors to destroy cancer. Olive Oil Back to more ordinary things. Like to cook Italian food and give it that dash of olive oil? Olive oil has many other uses. Did you know that you can use it in place of shaving cream? If you rub a teaspoon of olive oil into your face after washing you can now shave. It can be used to free one of those pesky stuck zippers. It is good for preventing cat hairballs. All you have to do is add a teaspoon of it to your cat's food and it is good for its coat also. It will shine stainless steel and brass. If you rub olive oil into your skin and let it set for about 5 minutes, it will remove paint. A small sip of it will remove that pesky tickle in your throat. It makes a great replacement for butter when cooking. Aspirin I think that most of us have aspirin in our medicine chests at home. Feel like your getting a temperature? You pop an aspirin or two. You might even take an aspirin everyday to prevent heart attacks, but this miracle pill has many other uses. You can treat insect bites by applying a simple aspirin solution. Combined with lemon, aspirin can become a great stain remover for your hands. A couple of aspirin in your shampoo will get rid of dandruff. Adding a crushed aspirin to the water holding cut flowers will make them last longer. If you have Athlete's foot, or other fungal diseases, grind three aspirin into powder and mix this with talcum powder. Apply to infected area twice a day to kill the fungi. Baking soda has many uses, some are very unusual. An example of this is using it as a deodorant for your underarms. If you put it in your bath it will help relieve skin irritations. You can gargle with water that has a teaspoon of baking soda in it to refresh your breath. Putting a teaspoon of it into a vaporizer will unblock stuffy noses. The powder can be used to put out small fires. Wipe your cars windshield with baking soda to repel rain. It will absorb odors if sprinkled on a litter box. It works very well for scrubbing sinks, and tubs. Cleaning ashtrays with a baking soda solution will get rid of the smell. So many simple things have other uses that we either don't know about, or just don't think about. |
