Incredible Recoveries

Many of us tend to think that the medical profession has the final word on whether we can be cured of a specific ailment, or injury. It is true that they are right most of the time, but it is also true that they are not right all of the time. Over the years there have been some miraculous recoveries from injuries and diseases of the type that the medical profession believed no one could ever recover from. When this happens most of us call it a miracle. A few of us believe that something in a particular person's makeup was responsible, maybe a unique gene or some body chemistry? Others believe that the mind has the power to heal and that a person that seems to make a miracle recovery has been cured because his or her mind willed it. Most prefer to believe that God played a hand and I am one of those.

A high school track star was involved in a terrible car accident. When doctors examined him they came to the conclusion that he would probably be a quadriplegic for life. A fate that would have been made even more horrible happening to not only one so young, but also to one so athletic. He had been asleep in the backseat of a friend's car when a tire blew out. The car was traveling on a busy highway. It went out of control and the boy was thrown through the rear window, breaking his spine. He had been operated on, but after the operation he was only able to move his eyelids. The boy kept working on trying to move body parts even though the doctors felt that it was hopeless. After two weeks he began to wiggle his toes. When the medical personal saw that, they were amazed and transferred him to a rehabilitation unit. In only seven weeks he walked haltingly with crutches, but walked. He said that he knows he will run again.

There is something known in the medical profession as MCS. This means a minimally conscious state. One man had been in such a state for almost 20 years. When a patient is in this state they are awake, but can not express any feelings and can not talk or move. This man just started to talk one day and later move. How was this possible? Doctors were just as surprised as anyone, but they figured out that the man's brain had grown new nerve connections. Upon testing, doctors could see that certain areas of his brain had much more activity than others with MCS. While this recovery is in itself a miracle, doctors are saying that they don't know if the recovery will continue, but they don't think so. Well they didn't think there would be any recovery so who knows?

A pre-teen boy was involved in the most horrible of accidents. He was in a car that was racing and it hit a barrier and severed his head. The injury is known as a internal decapitation and this usually kills someone instantly. Those that are not killed, and this is very rare, are usually completely disabled. Somehow the boy began to recover and after only a month he was going home for visits. The boy had been in a junior race and was going about 40 mph when the car hit the barrier and he had to be cut out of it. His mother was in the stand watching him. He was only 11 years old at the time. The car was so mangled that it took firefighters 1 ½ hours to cut him out. An operation was performed on him that lasted 6 hours, in which the head was reattached to his vertebrae with metal plates and bone grafts. Even the surgeon that conducted the operation had told the mother that there was only a 7% that he would even survive the operation.

Another boy even younger was shot with a stray bullets in the head. The right side of his brain was destroyed. He was in a coma for 2 weeks and doctors thought that he would never recover. Not only had his brain been partially destroyed, but half of his skull was now missing. The boy fooled everyone when he came out of the coma. He even appeared at a press conference and talked about what happened to him with reporters. One of the therapists said that this was his miracle boy. That certainly is understandable under the circumstances. The boy now has only the left side of his brain. The shooting happened when a neighbor, who had been drinking, decided to clean his deer rifle while sitting on the front stoop.

Sometimes death is not the end of life. This was true for a woman that had been dead for over 3 hours. This time the person was herself a doctor. She had been skiing with friends in Norway, when they fell through ice into a river head first. She had gotten wedged between rocks and the others who were able to get out could not free her. For over 1 ½ hours her body laid at the bottom of the freezing lake. Emergency services took 1 ½ hours to arrive. The temperature was so low that a new record was set for bringing someone back from such freezing conditions. She had been in the hospital over an hour before they were able to get her heart beating again. It took over 9 hours to get her breathing back to normal. When she was first revived she was paralyzed and after 8 month still doesn't have normal use of her hands.

There are far more miracle type recoveries than we suspect. Sometimes humans can recover from the very worst injuries and killer diseases. The will to live may also play a very large role in recovery, even when the injury is so severe that one loses part of their brain as we saw above. Yes even doctors can be wrong and that in itself should give us hope even in the worst of situations.
