Throughout history secret messages have been passed from one person to another. There were so many of them that I am sure that there must have been some that were sent to people that couldn't be decoded. Sometimes text is found, that while not thought to be in code, can not be figured out, even with all our computing power. An example of this is a find by scientists of ancient tablets, that are thought to be over 4,000 years old. They are all inscribed with ancient symbols and yet, with all our technology we can not figure out what they mean. The tablets were found in southeastern Iran. The language seems to use geometric symbols and it is believed that they could contain some history about about an independent culture that existed around 2500 B.C. It is thought that these people lived between the Mesopotamian and Indus Valleys. Some archaeologists are skeptical about this find however. Not all secret messages were coded. A famous secret message was sent to congress in 1803 by then President Thomas Jefferson. The reason the message was secret, was that Jefferson was trying to hide it from his political enemies. It was a request for the princely sum of $2,500 to finance the expedition of Lewis and Clark. Wow you can't even buy a large television for that price today. When I see things like this I realize just how worthless our money has become. President Abraham Lincoln A secret message was carried by President Abraham Lincoln and he never even knew it. It seems that a certain watchmaker was working on his watch, when the news came that Fort Sumter had been attacked. The watch maker immediately inscribed a message inside the watch that read, “The first gun is fired. Slavery is dead. Thank God we have a President who at least will try.” Lincoln carried this message around inside his watch for the rest of his life and never knew it. Even the museum where the watch is kept never knew about the message until the watchmaker's great-great-grandson revealed the fact and the museum decided to look into the watch. To their amazement there was the message that was hidden for all those years. The fact of what the watchmaker had done had been passed down for generations through his family. When we talk about secret messages we have to wonder if there are secret messages being sent through space by any other races. Perhaps they are communicating with ships and such? We know that SETI (The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence) has been looking for signals for years, supposedly unsuccessfully, but maybe there are signals all round us and we just don't recognize the fact. Who is to say that some medium isn't being used that we don't yet understand? As a matter of fact, why would an advanced race use anything that was light speed or slower? That type of message might take many years to reach its destination. President George Bush Sr. Many secret messages are sent by and through the government. Thousands of messages were revealed that were sent by Reagan and Bush on the Contra. This is not unusual as the government has to keep some things secret. The problem arises when these secret messages become public. That is because some of them are damning to the administration that sent them, while others are not. In this vein there is a rumor going around the Internet that President Obama sent a secret message to Castro stating that we will soon be seeking better relations with Cuba. This would be no surprise. Julius Caesar The Romans thought that they had figured out how to send secret messages. There is no doubt that the Romans were very intelligent and great builders and had the greatest army of their time, but the message system that they used seems very primitive by today's standards. They would take a tablet that had been written on and cover it with wax. When it was received the wax would be melted off and the message revealed. I would love to know what happened when the tablet was captured. Did someone say that there was nothing on it and throw it away? I just can't imagine this happening. If you saw something that was a tablet that you knew was a writing device and it was covered with wax, wouldn't you at least suspect that something was hidden under that stuff? I am sure you would. If a code was used to write the message that would be different and the Romans did use simple codes at times. Some secret codes are incredibly difficult, or impossible to break. An example is one type of code where a letter can represent one letter of the alphabet such as “a” meaning “d” and when it appears again it represents a completely different letter. A key is required to decipher this code. Sometimes the random number generator of a computer is used to generate those codes, but I will not get into the specifics of this complicated system. Suffice it to say that without the key, many say that this type of code can not be broken. This type of code became famous in World War I, before there were even any computers in use. Some say that there are secret messages written on some of the walls of ancient Egyptian temples. It is true that almost everything concerning ancient Egypt is surrounded in mystery, which fuels the secret message theory even more. One case in point is the temple at Abydos. This temple has long been the target of speculation because of its engravings and plaques. One of which shows what looks like a plane, helicopter and saucer shaped UFO. Some feel that this is a message that was left for a future race, but they are not exactly sure what it means. Could it be that it is a prediction of our technological advancement? Maybe it is a message that is telling us that some other race or races has already reached the point of technology illustrated in the plaque. It could also be a message left by aliens. There is so much speculation on this point. There are just so many messages, secret messages and secrets that they boggle the mind, but one thing is for sure, we are creating more every day. |
