Why are some peoples so prosperous while others have very little? For example Europeans have much more than Africans in general. The answer was said to be because while both had about the same intelligence, Europeans began agriculture way before Africans, but wait, how can that explanation be true when the Egyptians were growing crops while Europeans were just a bunch of wild tribes? Regardless of what this research says, that can not be the reason. Some say that the real reason was that Europeans devoted themselves to conquering other nations. They perfected weapons and the art of war. It is certainly true that Europeans had fought for many years, but so had other races of people. The Chinese, the Indians, the Egyptians and many older Asian and African nations that have now disappeared were fighting long before there were even Europeans, so that can't be the reason either. It turns out that this is a very hard question to answer. Maybe the Europeans got control of the most money over the years? There is just not a ready answer to this question, even though some say there is. Did you hear about the Japanese robot that gave out too much love? An eminent Japanese scientist designed a software program that would allow a robot to express love. He loaded the program into the robot and put a stuffed animal in with the robot, then turned it on. It stared at the animal for about an hour, then finally picked it up and hugged it. At first this was hailed as a huge success. People would interact with the robot and it might even greet them with a hug. Then it happened, after a month or two it began to hug people and not let them go. It had developed too much feeling for people, or so it was said. I prefer to think that its learning program was not written correctly. It got to the point where the robot had to be turned off and is only turned back on for short demonstrations. It just shows you that you can have too much of a good thing. NASA has satellites everywhere and they have picked up a lot of strange things that we will never know about. You might say, hey how does this guy know about that? I can only restate what some people, including scientists, had stated. These things just keep snapping away and if anything unusual happens, there is a good chance that one of them will get a picture of it. Well that is just what has happened and this time we have a photo to prove it. The photo was taken a couple of years ago by an environmental satellite and shows the wakes of several different objects moving at incredible speed. The objects were flying over the Indian Ocean and were in formation. Experts have calculated that the objects were moving anywhere from 4,000 to 6,000 miles per hour. The wakes indicate that the objects were of a great size and therefore could not have been any known aircraft. When questioned, NASA officials refused to comment. Here we are, a country with probably the biggest power grid in the world. Some see this grid as just a grid, while others see the grid as a target. Hackers all over the world would love to be able to shut down our grids and cause chaos. Some countries are also trying to find a way to do this, in case they decide to launch a cyber attack. Computer experts have been asked if it is even possible to shut down all our power and the scarey part is that most have to answer that they really don't know. This certainly doesn't instill confidence in the average person, does it? In all fairness the experts seem to think that even if all our power is turned off, that it could be restarted in about three days or so. Wow I wouldn't want to be in a place like Alaska in the winter without power for three days, that could be the difference between living and dying. In places like Florida it would amount to a huge inconvenience to all those people, except the ones using electrical equipment to maintain their life. I just read a story that was quite bizarre. A woman had kept bees for many years until she died. Soon after her death hundreds of bees settled on a wall across the street from her home and remained there for about an hour before flying away. No one had ever seen anything like this before. Some people believe that somehow the bees knew that the woman had died and knew where she lived. Maybe they didn't know she died, but hadn't seen her in a couple of days and were coming to investigate? Bees are famous for not only remembering where food is located, but being able to communicate this to other bees. Perhaps one bee led the rest to the house? Another bizarre event involved a car crash. Two different witnesses called police to report that they had seen a car run off the road at high speed. The police came and investigated and here is what they found, a car with a long dead driver was exactly where the car was reported running off the road. This car had been there for over five months. What had these people seen, there was no other car around? There it was, an old abandoned house that hadn't had anyone living in it for over 20 years. One day the family of the long deceased owners decided to clean out the old house. It just so happened that one of the people doing the cleanup was a gentlemen that owned a rare coin store. He had gathered a bag of old coins and was moving them down the stairs when he noticed that there was a hole in the wall. One of the relatives told him that when she was a little girl, she had heard that the family used to throw their coins into a hole in the wall. The hole was in an upper floor. The coin guy decided to go down to the first floor and make a hole in the wall directly beneath. He found a bonanza of coins there that he figured were worth about $200,000. A couple of years ago I ran a daily blurb called Short Takes, where I would post a paragraph of material every day that resembled the different items in this article. I had to stop because it was just too much work to do along with writing the articles. I got quite a few emails asking me to restart Short Takes. I can't do that on a daily basis, but I promised that I would do it once in a while and this article is my first Short Takes, since I stopped writing them. |
