Accounting For Missing People

People are disappearing at an alarming rate. We don't notice it because there are so many people on this planet that if thousands disappear from all over the world in a day, that is just a drop in each country's bucket, as they say. This does not alter the fact of their disappearance however. Some of the more infamous disappearances, especially those of children hit the headlines, but mostly people just disappear, never to be seen again. There is no doubt that some of them are the victims of crime, especially crimes like white slavery, where pretty girls are whisked away and forced to ply the sex trade, usually in foreign countries. They are shot up with drugs to make them dependant and docile. It is truly a terrible crime. Then there are those that simply wander into places like woods and such and have an accident and get killed. In some of the under developed countries they are eaten by wild animals.

There is also that group of people that have lost their memory through diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's and wander away and have no identification on them and can not even remember their name and may be sitting in a nursing home or mental institution somewhere, while there family has no idea where they are. In the military there are always people unaccounted for during wartime. There are even a few that go missing in peacetime. Sometimes they are found and sometimes not. At the end of World War Two, there were a huge amount of missing soldiers. Most of them had probably died in some way as not to leave a trace, such as in an explosion. The same thing happens at times during different disasters, some people just disappear. They are really killed most of the time, but there is no one left alive that saw this happen and their bodies may have been washed out to sea or buried in many feet of lava or ash.

Some people feel that if we discount the victims of crime, accidental deaths, animal attacks, drowning, war and such, that this still doesn't account for the amount of people that go missing every year. They might have a point, but it is hard to tell. Just in the U.S. it was reported that two years ago, people were going missing at the rate of 2,300 per day, or about 840,000 per year. It has been increasing every year so it is likely to be more than that now. Strangely it is not always one person that disappears, sometimes it is an entire group. You can imagine that if the U.S. alone has almost a million people disappearing every year, what the figure must be for the entire world. It has to be many millions. There are tons of theories on this, because as I said before, many feel that it is just too many to account for.

One theory is that some of these people somehow fall out of time into another dimension. Another is that aliens are abducting them. I am sure that we have all heard that theory many times. I have heard it said that some people believe that about one in eight Americans has already been abducted, yet this doesn't fit the bill, because these people were all said to have been returned, as far as we know. Remember all those stories about spontaneous human combustion? Some people believe that some of us just burn up without a trace. I would like to know how they account for the fact that no one ever sees anyone walking along, or at a gathering, or any social event, that burns up in front of people? Most of those cases, if not all, are of people found in their room alone that burned up. Another popular theory is that people are being abducted so that medical experiments can be conducted on them and then they are disposed of. That certainly is a horrible thought.

One of the theories that I find most interesting, but I don't necessarily support, is one that states that many people that disappear come back as other people. It is very hard for me to wrap my brain around this theory, but its interesting never the less. They even take this a step further in saying that the people that come back don't even look the same and may not even be of the same gender anymore and have no memory of who they were originally. Years ago there were a lot of movies about amnesia, where people would forget who they were and their entire life. You don't see much of that anymore. The fact is that there are about ten million people in the U.S. that are affected by some form of amnesia every year. It is usually due to some type of illness. Not all amnesia destroys the entire memory, most of the time it is partial amnesia. These types of people could be wandering around not knowing who they are.

The problem of missing people has made us pause. Indeed if you can not account for all the numbers of missing people worldwide by the usual methods, than what is the cause for their disappearance? Are we just under estimating the amounts of people gone missing because of crime, war and such? It doesn't seem so. Remember that there is no war going on inside the U.S. right now and yet we have high numbers of missing people every day. When you have a large population to draw from, you do have those that can be plucked from the population and most people won't notice. There are the homeless, illegal aliens, the lonely elderly and others who's disappearances would hardly make a wave. Is there some sinister plot to use these people in some way? We haven't found any evidence of this yet, even though there are all these theories. If you believe that aliens are abducting them, then you would first have to believe that there are extraterrestrial aliens visiting earth. If you believe that they are being used for terrible experiments, you would have to believe that it was our government doing this because of the scale of disappearances. No we don't know why so many of us are going missing yet, we can only hope for an answer to this question soon.
