Deadly Pets

So many of us have pets. There are pets of every description in the households all over this country. Most of them are legal and enjoy their status and are more than willing to give us their love in return for ours. Who hasn't had a loving dog or cat in their life? Yet, we fail to realize that certain things can happen to our pets that make them dangerous. One thing that can affect an animal's nature, is the way they are treated. Most animals like dogs and cats realize when they are being treated badly. Treating animals badly can lead to some really mean animals. An example of this is the junkyard dog. A dog that is chained up all day and left out all night in the harshest of weather. One can hardly blame the poor dog for its attitude when it was raised to react in a dangerous manner.

Cats usually do not show as much affection outwardly as a dog, although I have had a cat that was quite unusual. It used to wait for me to come home and when it saw my car, it would run up to it waiting for me to get out. When I did it would paw me on the leg and run around the tree in the front of the house, wanting me to chase it. It loved to play games. The cat did have a very strange side and used to scare my wife sometimes. It did this by waiting for her to fall asleep then going over to her and pressing its nose against hers and trying to look into her eyes. She woke up a couple of times this way screaming. It was not a pleasant sight. I have to admit that I thought it was funny, which made things even worse. That cat had the soul of a person. I don't mean that literally, what I mean is that it was very intelligent and really seemed to know what was going on.

Some pets are unusual. I don't want to offend pet owners here, but some animals should never be pets. We tend to think of certain animals like chimps, as being human like. I guess that is because they look so much like us. I am sure that most of us have read the story about the 200 pound chimp that turned mean all of a sudden. It was the pet of a woman and a former star of tv commercials. It had never shown a tendency to being mean. The chimp was 15 years old when things changed. It mauled and almost killed a house guest and when the police were called, it cornered one in his car and it finally had to be shot and killed. Chimps are one of those animals that shouldn't be pets. I know that I will get a lot of mail about this statement, but here is why I say that. A chimp is so strong that it has the capability of ripping the arms and legs off of a human. It is like keeping a tiger in your home. It can be sweet and fun until something goes wrong, then it can be deadly and nothing short of a bullet can stop it.

What people fail to realize is that animals can suffer from things like mental illness and even tooth aches and this can drive them to do things that they would not ordinarily do. It is dangerous enough even having a dog around, but most of them are so loyal that there is not much worry, but there is some never the less. Animals are not only subject to illness and pain that we might not know about, but they can also be jealous. How many times have we heard about the loving family dog, killing a new born baby? Far more times than I would like to think about. You have to remember that animals, even if they seem to know right from wrong, might do bad things when they think that you are not watching. Sometimes it is only ripping open a garbage bag, but other times it can be a lot more serious. I know that my dog is very good even with tiny children, but if I am not home and forget to take out the garbage, she will rip the bag open and when I come home I can tell right away, because she looks so guilty. This means that she knew she was doing something wrong and did it anyway.

One pet that some people have is of the type that I just don't understand owning and that is a large snake. I know that there are a lot of snake owners out there, but to me a snake does not exhibit any qualities that I would like. I had a friend that owned a couple of dozen snakes. They ranged from small snakes to boa constrictors. I had a hard time getting past the smell. He would feed them live mice and rats. This did not appeal to me either. One time he was feeding one of them when it bit right through his hand. I don't know if the snake did this on purpose, or since a snake's eyesight is so bad it didn't realize that it was his hand, but in either case he had two huge fangs protruding right through and still has the scars today. He also used to raise his own mice and rats to feed the snakes, which I am sure was one of the reasons for his domestic problems.

You never know if a pet will turn on you. Sometimes the pet can be one that no one would ever suspect would do this. What am I talking about? Well there was this veterinarian that had a saltwater fish tank and it was time to do some maintenance on it. Since this guy was a veterinarian, you would have to assume that he really knew animals and he might have, but did he know fish? He had a Lion fish. When he stuck his hand into the tank the fish immediately stung him. He fell to the floor and called his girlfriend. He didn't realize how serious the situation was. He began to have seizures and convulsions. It turns out that Lion fish are deadly and if this guy hadn't been taken to a hospital with a specialist on staff, he would have died within the hour. Why would anyone want such a deadly beast in their home? Even if it is in a tank, there might be a time when someone like a child might put their hands in there.

This past Christmas a charity event was held. It featured a man dressed as Santa. What could be more benign than that? The problem was the event was held in a pet store and people were allowed to bring in their pets to be photographed with Santa. I don't get this, but there you are, some people loved it. Anyway all was fine until one customer brought in his pet bobcat. The bobcat decided that Santa would make a nice Christmas dinner. What happened was that the bobcat went crazy when it saw the dogs that were at the pet shop and panicked

We all have to remember that pets are not the same as us in their thinking, even after many years of living with us. They don't have the intelligence that we have and certainly don't have the same sense of right and wrong, even though it may seem that way. They should never be put into a situation where we are relying on their goodness not to attack adults or small children.
