Strange Coincidences
Sometimes things happen to us that just can't be accounted for. The odds against these happenings is so remote that the odds of winning the lottery would be better, yet these things do happen. Sometimes these things are just strange, sometimes they are downright scary. A ship left port in 1906 and was scheduled to sail between Bremen and New York. It was called the Grosser Kurfurst. When it reached its destination, a baby had been born in the first class section, twins had been born in the second class section and triplets were born in the third class section. A man and woman went through a very troubled divorce that took six years. He was so put off by this marriage that he didn't date for many years. Finally he decided that he would try one of the new computer dating services. He thought that this was a good way to come up with his ideal soul mate. After joining the service, the service went through thousands of applicants and came up with a match for him. It was his former wife that he had such a hard time divorcing. Did you ever notice that when the movie Matrix came out, Neo's passport stated that it was valid until 11 September 01 and that he was born in Capital City USA? That is Capital as in money or economy not Capitol. We all know that New York City is considered the financial center of the world. Some coincidences are too amazing for words. They strain our brains in ways that we can't imagine. Did you ever hear of James Dean? He was a very famous actor that died in a car crash in 1955. He was driving his Porsche sports car. What happened after that with the car is legendary. The car had been towed to a garage after the accident where the engine fell out onto a mechanic, injuring him severely. Some time later the engine was purchased separately and put into a racing car which killed its owner and driver. The Porsche was then repaired with a new engine and the repair shop burned down. The car was then brought to California and put on display, but fell off and injured a spectator. As the car was being moved to Oregon the trailer holding the car came off the hitch and the trailer went through a shop window. In 1959 the car had been mounted on steel supports and suddenly broke into eleven pieces for no apparent reason. Here is another great coincidence that I learned about. The year was 1883. This guy had decided to break off his relationship with his girlfriend. She became so distraught that she ended up committing suicide. This enraged her brother so much that he shot the guy and thought that he had killed him and then he committed suicide. The guy he had shot was only grazed and had passed out. The bullet had gone into a tree on this guys property. Many years passed and the guy thought that he had literally dodged the bullet. One day he decided that he wanted to cut the tree down, but the tree was very big so he used dynamite. The explosion propelled the bullet from the tree into the man's head killing him instantly. The bullet had gotten him after all. Here is one of my favorite coincidences: When we talk about coincidence we are talking about natural coincidence. What I really don't like is when people try and take some event and force things into it and then claim it is a coincidence. So much of this happened with the tragic events of 9/11. They dissect numbers and such and try to make them come out to 911. If you have a large enough base of events you can force almost anything to happen statistically. I think that saying things like there were 254 passengers on a plane that crashed into a tower means that 2+5+4 = 11 and that equals the 11 in 9/11 is ridiculous. Anyway let's check another coincidence. Anthony Hopkins, the famous actor, landed a leading role in a film that was based on the book, “The Girl From Petrovka”. He decided to go to a London bookstore to get a copy of the book. After checking with many different book stores he was disappointed to find that he couldn't find a copy of it anywhere. He went back to the London train station and there on a empty bench was a copy of the book. He took it. Years later he was filming the story and the author came by. He started telling Hopkins that he didn't even have a copy of his own book. He said that he had lent it to a friend who had left it at the London train station and it had all of his notes in it. Hopkins went to his dressing room and came out with a book in his hand and said, “is this it?” It was the same book. A man that sets up computer networks for a living was setting up one in a lady's house when the phone rang. He heard her say that she didn't know who the guy was that was calling and stopped what he was doing and told her he knew him. She said that was impossible because he was calling from a different state, he was calling from California. The man stated that this was where the guy went in the winters. She couldn't believe it and hung up and redialed the number and asked for the caller by name and he responded. She then asked him if he knew the network guy and he replied,"yes and tell him to get to my winter home and get that network set up". It seems that the guy in California was calling a relative and dialed the wrong number and got a home where the network installer was putting in a network before going to the caller's home to install his network. What could possibly be the odds on this? |
