Looking Up The Dead
Have you ever wondered where some of the more famous people were buried? I don't know why I would be interested in this, but for some some odd reason known only to God, I am. Maybe its the fact that people that were inaccessible to most of us become very accessible after their death. What I mean by this, is that you can usually go right up to the grave of anyone without being stopped. I have been to the grave of Teddy Roosevelt a few times and I was the only one there. By the way, that grave is in Oyster Bay right across from the road that goes into his estate which is now a national park. The grave is in a small cemetery and has a black iron fence around it. There are two small flags planted on either side of the headstone. There are many other Roosevelts buried in this cemetery Click Here F or More Info Howard Hughes was a fascinating character when he was alive and many people have revived interest in his life after seeing the movie 'The Aviator'. His grave can be found in Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Remember Anthony Quinn? He was a great movie actor and appeared in many famous films. He played Zorba The Greek. I bet you thought he was buried somewhere in California? You couldn't be more wrong. He is buried in Bristol, Rhode Island on the Quinn Family Estate. I guess this grave would be inaccessible. I had to include William Boyd even though you would have to be in your 60s to know who he was. He was better know as Hopalong Cassidy of western movie fame. Mr Boyd was a popular hero of the younger generation of the time and even made many personal appearances. He is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California. No list would be complete without a listing for Marilyn Monroe, real name Norma Jean Baker. The movie idol of millions, she even influenced the president with visits to the White House where she was rumored to be having an affair with President John Kennedy. She died under mysterious circumstances and is the subject of many conspiracy theories. She is buried in Westwood Memorial Park, Los Angeles, California. What about J. Edgar Hoover? Here was one of the most important people of his time. It is said that the reason he was never replaced was that he had a file on everyone. Mr. Hoover is buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC. Nathan Hale was one of the heroes of our country. He was executed by the British as a spy. General Howe had him hanged at the tender age of only 21 years. He is buried in the Nathan Hale Cemetery, Coventry, Connecticut. James Dean was an actor that shot to the top of his profession yet only made a couple of films. He was only 24 years old when he was killed in an auto accident in 1955. He is buried in Park Cemetery, Fairmount, Indiana. Remember Chris Farley the stocky comedian from Saturday Night Live? He made several movies but they never seemed to make the grade. Like many other actors and comedians he got hooked on drugs and it killed him. He is buried in Resurrection Cemetery, Madison, Wisconsin. Everyone knows who Lucille Ball was. People actually grew up watching the 'I Love Lucy' show. She is another person that is not buried where you would expect her to be. Lucy is buried at Lake View Cemetery, Jamestown, New York. I debated on whether I should this one or not, because I knew that no one would know who he was but I am listing him anyway because he won the Congressional Medal of Honor TWICE for his actions in World War I. John Joseph Kelly is buried at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois. Anyone know who Wyatt Earp is? Just kidding. The famous lawman of the old west who was involved in the shoot out at the OK Corral is buried at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park, Colma, California. How about a famous Civil War renegade? The most famous of them all was William Clarke Quantrill the Guerilla leader who killed many civilians and burned many homes. Even the south didn't want anything to do with him by the end of the war. He is buried at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. No one was more famous than John Wayne was during his time. He was born in Iowa and was buried in Pacific View Memorial Park, Corona, California. Buddy Holly was a singer and musician that rose to the top of the heap rather quickly but he also died very young. He was 23 years old. He is buried in the City of Lubbock Cemetery, Lubbock, Texas. Tennessee Williams who's real name was Thomas Lanier, was a famous playwright, so famous that he is considered one of the best this country has ever produced. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Saint Louis, Missouri. Benjamin Franklin was one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence and a leading scientist and newspaper editor of his time. He is buried in Christ Church Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln is buried in the National Museum of Health and Medicine, Walter Reed, Washington, DC. I think I will finish this up with Benedict Arnold, a General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and the most famous traitor this country has ever know. Appropriately he is buried at Saint Mary's Battersea Church, London, England. |
