Archeology is such a fascinating subject, It has been made more popular by movies like Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider. Personally I am glad that these movies came out, because we need to be more interested in our past. Someone once said that only by studying our past, can we know who we are. I say that only by studying our past can we know what we might do in the future. Recent discoveries in Egypt have shown that there are a lot of undiscovered pyramids, temples and structures that have yet to be dug up. One estimate puts the amount of buildings still covered by sand at over 3,000 and the amount of pyramids under the sand at at least 17. Estimates have been made on tombs yet to be dug up, but I believe that no one can know how many of them there really are. How could we possibly know these things? We can thank our current technology for that. Satellite mapping was used. It might turn out that at least a few of these structures might have been built over other ones and the satellite counted them as one.

Why were the ancient Egyptians such prolific builders? We know that they believed in the afterlife and many of their buildings had some connection to it., but they also built for practical purposes. We don't hear much about ancient Egyptian buildings that aren't temples, tombs, or pyramids, but as I said they exist. A team of archaeologists recently unearthed an administrative building that had silos near by. The building was believed to belong to an Egyptian governor. The silos were probably there because the ancient Egyptians might have used them to distribute grain to the people. They might have even paid some people in the civil service with grain. Finding ancient Egyptian administrative buildings in Egypt is relatively rare. One archaeologist stated, "Ancient Egyptian administration is mainly known from texts, but the full understanding of the institutions involved and their role within towns and cities has been so far difficult to grasp, because of the lack of archaeological evidence with which textual data needs to be combined.”

When an archaeologist was asked about what the satellites found, she replied, "These are just the sites [close to] the surface, There are many thousands of additional sites that the Nile has covered over with silt. This is just the beginning of this kind of work." As hard as it is to believe, ancient Egypt had structures everywhere. It makes one wonder how many ancient structures might be under some of the Egyptian cities that have not been discovered yet? Some people are asking the question, “was there some other people in this land before the ancient Egyptians? There have been persistent rumors that the pyramids are really much older than we have been led to believe. There are even some Egyptologists that don't think that the Egyptians built the Great Pyramid. Then there are those that think that maybe ancient Egyptians found these monuments and restored them as best they could. One theory even states that when they found the Great Pyramid, they could not figure out what it was for and that is why there is nothing inside it to indicate that it ever was a tomb and it doesn't contain anything to state what it was.

Zahi Hawass was the famous head of Egyptian antiquities until the recent overturn of the Egyptian government at which time he resigned. He doesn't seem to have much faith in satellites and has stated that only traditional archeology will prove if the findings are true. I guess it is hard for an old timer to accept that technology has moved on to the point where it can find these things. His statement is like saying that using sonar to find enemy submarines will never work, you need to be able to see the sub. We all know that this isn't true anymore. It is said that the satellites used infrared and at this wavelength entire underground cities became visible.

When archaeologists discuss the Great Pyramid, there are many different theories on why it was built. I have heard everything from a temple or tomb, to an electrical power generating station. There is no doubt that the Great Pyramid of Giza is among the 10 most important discoveries made in Egypt and illustrates a competency in building that we can't even equal today. This is one of the great mysteries of all times. It is not alone however in being a great discovery. Egypt is full of great discoveries. Another one that is not mentioned much was the discovery of a buried ship near the Great Pyramid. This proved that the ancient Egyptians were capable of conducting commerce throughout the world and showed us how their technology could have been spread. Another incredible discovery was an unfinished obelisk. This was a fantastic discovery, because it showed that the ancient Egyptians were capable of carving a 137 foot obelisk out of solid stone that weighed about 1200 tons and they somehow had the means to move it and erect it. It was actually carved out of bedrock. It is often said that they could do these things because they had so much manpower, but unless they discovered tools capable of doing this, it would have taken forever. Contrary to what most say, I think that someday we will discover that these things could not have been simply carved using copper and bronze hand tools.

We know that the Egyptians are a very ancient civilization, but where did they and we come from? A ten year study claims to have that answer. African DNA was studied and the scientists reached the conclusion that all of us are the descendants of a race known as the San People of South Africa. The team was composed of African, US and European researchers. One scientist stated, '”These mutations were distinct from the mutations that arose in Europe. It's a very good example of genetic and cultural co-evolution because we have the development of a cultural innovation, the domestication of cattle and the rise of a genetic mutation that played a role in the cultural development.” Not all scientists agree with the way some DNA results are interpreted.
