Pyramids, Sphinx, Water Damage And Ancient Structures

When we think of Egypt, we usually think of a country that has a rich ancient culture and a country that could have been the basis for the rest of civilization. Whether this notion is correct or not is not the point, the point is that is what most people think. The country of Egypt is more than a country, in a sense it belongs to all humans. The treasures such as the sphinx and pyramids are objects that are treasured by all humanity. Unfortunately these treasures are being destroyed at a rate that is almost inconceivable. Weathering and the acid effects of our modern atmosphere are playing havoc with the ancient tombs and monuments. Think of things this way, a tomb that has been sealed from the ravages of air has laid dormant for thousands of years. Its paintings and furnishings intact. Suddenly it is opened and air is allowed to circulate in it along with sunlight in some cases. Have you ever seen what sunlight can do to something in a store window? If not I will tell you, it will fade an object until it is unrecognizable or disappears. As far as modern air goes, it is much more acidic than air used to be, thanks to the millions of cars and factories belching out caustic exhausts. It is estimated that in about 100 years some of the tombs will be destroyed and within 300 years many other more substantial objects will be gone.

When we talk about the Sphinx and Pyramids there are a few archaeologists that are involved in a great debate with the rest of the community. Most archaeologists state that the pyramids are about 4.500 years old. This is not true of the entire community. The Egyptian government maintains that this figure is correct, yet there are no dates, or clues inscribed inside any of these objects. The man in charge of the pyramids and indeed all the antiquities is Dr. Zahi Hawass. He is the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and he states that ancient graffiti was discovered inside the pyramids that indicate that Egyptians built them. Indeed if they are as old as some state they would have to have been built some time before 10,500 years ago. Some claim that Egypt manufactured the graffiti to maintain their hold on these objects and to keep the tourist trade coming to Egypt. The truth is that no matter who built these object, tourists will always come to see them, but national pride is a whole other ball game.

It has long been suspected that there is an opening under one of the paws of the Sphinx and this opening is a room. The Egyptian government has refused to let anyone explore under there. It was felt that if a room did exist, there was a good chance that document would be found in it which would prove who exactly built these monuments and maybe even why. It is known that the Egyptians have been digging under the pyramid for years and some believe this digging has spread to under the Sphinx and even if there was a room under it, the contents have been removed by now. Water damage under the Sphinx and pyramids exists. It is said that there has been no water in this area for over 10,500 years. This has led some archaeologist to insist that these objects were built before that period and if so by some other race, since the Egyptians didn't exist yet. This means that the Egyptians inherited these objects.

Most people think that the ancient Egyptians were the first civilization, but nothing could be further from the truth. There were other civilizations before them and many of these civilizations even kept records of their history. A great upheaval occurred about 12,000 years ago, when all the ice from the most recent ice age melted in a hurry. This caused the oceans to rise several hundred feet, wiping out many coastal settlements. Along with this, many historians think that something else took place, perhaps a hit by a comet, or a shifting of the poles. Taking all this into consideration, one can understand where stories like the tale of Atlantis came from. We may never know what great societies were lost during this time.

One thing that is never mentioned when talking about the Giza Plateau it the fact that there was a Giza Plateau Mapping Project. This may not seem germane to what we are talking about here, but let me tell you about what was found. While archaeologists were trying to find the best route for a road, part of a Old Kingdom settlement was found. What makes this so important is the fact that there was much evidence of water. So much so that it was assumed that the meager remains of a building were caused when the building was washed away by floods. The ground showed evidence of being wet and dried many times. Here is a paragraph from the report:
“The Old Kingdom surface is relatively flat, compact, and practically cemented, apparently from wetting and drying. No evidence of a roadway, as we saw in a 5 X 5 m square just north of the gate during our 2001 session was observed. The only structural feature was a double line of thin, worn bricks northeast of the gate and oriented roughly northeast-southwest in the direction of the gate. These appear to be the meager residue of a structure that may have been washed away. The whole surrounding surface was very wet at one time, if not repeatedly so. About twenty-eight prints of large and small hoofs – possibly cattle, donkeys, and goats – located randomly in the Old Kingdom surface testified that it had been wet at one time.”

I think you can see how important this report is as concerns the water damage to the pyramids and Sphinx. It seems that floods came through the area. While this is not enough proof for water damage on on these objects, it could indicate why there might have been water damage and prompt further research. But this fact alone is not enough to date any of these objects, because they could have been built prior to 4,500 years ago and received water damage in more than one period of time. This just gives us more food for thought.

Let's not forget about some of the objects that have been found under the water that could date back to approximately the same time that some archaeologists give for the Sphinx and Pyramids, the 10,500 year plus date. While some of these monuments are still being debated, their dates are not. An example are the ruins of what some say are an ancient temple off the coast of Japan. If it is proven that they are man made, then they would easily reach back in time to the 10,500 year plus date and prove that humans were able to construct such things. Even without this proof one has only to look at the temple at Göbekli Tepe that is over 9,500 years old and may be far older, to realize that man could construct objects out of stone and sometimes very large stones, that defy us today.

To realize the damage caused by the rising ocean one has only to go to Malta and look at ancient cart tracks that disappear over the edge of cliffs. It is believed that these tracks once led to quarries that transported stone to newly built cities that disappeared under the ocean depths.
